There will always be pc gaming. The reason for this is simple economics. I?m sure many large companies would love to see every other developer drop out of the pc market. If ?Valve? was the only company developing games for the pc I would be the first in line to purchase stock. No one is EVER going to leave a market untapped.
The death of PC gaming has been foretold since PC?s were one minute old. Every time some new console comes out people say computers gaming will die. Im sure many ere remember when the original xbox came out and people said a pc would never surpass it in graphics. Of course we all know how long that lasted.
Every time major new pc hardware comes out people say pc gaming is dead or its too expensive. Well you don?t have to have bleeding edge hardware. I just picked up a x1900AIW for $125 at comp usa closing sale. My dell just cost me $200 to get the upgraded 7900. This gives me excellent graphics.
Also people tend to say ?Why spend $1000 to game when you can buy a console for $400?. This is just nuts. The simple answer is a PC, even a gaming rig, is used for far more than gaming. I love to game but its still what I spend the minority of my time doing. I don?t personally know anyone who doesn?t also use their computer for homework, ebay, internet, message boards, etc. Im sure there are people out there but 99% are multi use machines. If you are on here you obviously use yours for something besides gaming as well. I, like many and perhaps you, need to have a PC anyway. My graphics card is the only part of my pc that is upgraded so I can game. This added $200 to the price of my pc (geforce 7900). Most people don?t need a multi card solution with 6 gigs of ram to get that extra 10 fps. Already you are seeing the mid range cards equaling or bettering the xbox 360 in graphics. There will also always be decent mid range graphics cards as well (again for economics). You also don?t need to replace them all the time. My last card lasted me 3 years and it can still play HL@ and other modern games with decent detail.
Every time there is a new OS people claim its not game friendly. We went through that with 98,me,and xp. Bugs are improved and code is streamlined.
I would say most home pc?s are used for gaming at least sometimes. This may be from simple flash games to the latest FPS. This isn?t to say that there will be 1000 developers of games for the PC like consoles, there never has been, but there will always be someone making good games. Consoles have always had more developers but they also have TONS of ultra crappy games. Also with consoles becoming more like stripped down PC?s it has become easier to port console games which save money in development costs.
I have a dreamcast with 85+ games and an xbox with 60+ games. I still do most of my gaming on a pc. My Xbox actually hasn?t been touched in a month, I game on my pc almost every day.
