Its a cheap alternative that requires no upgrading, and you can get plenty of eye candy with the next gen consoles.

If you need to start a thread like this and talk so much about it and how its going to be "dead" then your not a true PC gamer, i dont care what you say. :p

Hah- you can't even run Alan Wake. You don't even deserve to be called a PC gamer. PPhhh single core garbage. Phhh. My grandma could out fps you.:p

Not this crap again.

Every time a new wave of consoles comes out, it's supposed to herald the "End of PC Gaming" - and every time, it's horseshit.

Please, don't give these morons any more press.

.

Again, this has nothing to do with consoles or for that matter, PC gaming really dying. It's about a large percentage of people that might start to look at the ever increasing monetary investment needed to game in "luxury"(actually enjoy it) and say "yea I've had enough of this horsexxxx - I'm out"

I guarantee you that I'd get a lot more "enjoyment" out of stomping you a new mudhole in BF2 at 800x600 than you'd get from being my bitch in high definition. ;)

Heehee- but your boot would look so much better coming down on my face at 2600 x 1850+ definition.:D

Is alan wake out now? :p (when it is I wont be compaining I'll be playing)

And i'm not bitching about it, I'll be upgrading to Quad core next month and a G80 (maybe 2).

This is the way a PC gamer has to be now a days with the competion from the consoles.

Don't bitch about it..Buy more games, and Upgrade more often and IT WONT DIE!

Chase, I doubt that your 3Ghz K8 chip is going to struggle and be completely unplayable in a game that a P4 class chip can run with HT. You will take a performance hit by not being able to run 2 threads at once, but it isn't like HT gives super huge performance increases. It's only on the order of 30% for the most optimized situations. Your rather impressive OC should probably make up for the benfits of HT in any released model of P4.

Hardware requirements have always been increasing. Such is the nature of technology. But to say that they've increased exponentionally is wrong. Show me a game that came out October of '04, then Oct '05, and then take Gothic3 or NWN or Dark Messiah for '06 and show me that they've increased exponentially.

You will soon be hearing about the better game performance with 4 GIGS of memory under Vista. That's right. 4 Gigs will soon be the new "standard".

Define "soon". Everything is relative. Does soon mean sometime in 2007? Cuz I don't buy it. If it's longer than that, it ain't soon. I think you can count on one hand how many games have listed a minimum requirement of 1GB ram.

Games (Alan Wake) that won't run on less than a dual core CPU.(And still run crappy unless you have a Quad core).

Again, don't believe the hype spit out by marketing flunkies at an Intel developers conference for a game published by Microsoft. Alan Wake will run on a single-core machine. They are requiring Vista though. But I'm sure that's more of a strong-arm selling point for Vista than it is an issue with XP or DX9 holding it back.

The biggest problem I see with hardware requirements for games is that when they list minimum requirements that are so far below realistic that it's ridiculous to even attempt to play it with such a machine unless playing at 640x480 with everything on low.

As a final note about system requirements-- NWN2 is coming out in just a few weeks. I'll have it running on my LAN with 3 machines. The fastest is an A64 3000+ x1900xtx and the slowest is a 1.2ghz Tualatin 5900ultra. A machine built in '99 (granted, upgraded several times over the years) is still running the latest games (even Oblivion on low).

You two above me have good points. I guess a year from now we will know more about these newer games and hardware requirements. Maybe we will get lucky also and have MS change the EULA for Vista to let us have unlimited upgrades. I'll still be with my single core most likely cursing the dude who just took me out on his no lag, ultra fps, Quad core, Quad SLI rig.

If I had to group myself in somewhere, I'd say this would be the place. I'm sure my overclocked E6600@3.0Ghz will be fast enough for games for some time to come. The killer is the $500-$600 graphics cards that will require 600w power supplies ($150 and up for a quality 600w) to run without worrying about voltage fluxuations. Not to mention the cost of an OS upgrade ($260 for Ultimate upgrade?) when DX10 is required for "luxury" gaming (if Vista does have the 1-2 major hardware upgrade BS, then I'm done with upgrading). Also, when last generations SLI takes less power than the soon-to-be current gen single card solution...something is just wrong.

Somewhere there's a script running that posts the death of PC Gaming on some random website every 6 months.

There will always be pc gaming. The reason for this is simple economics. I?m sure many large companies would love to see every other developer drop out of the pc market. If ?Valve? was the only company developing games for the pc I would be the first in line to purchase stock. No one is EVER going to leave a market untapped.

The death of PC gaming has been foretold since PC?s were one minute old. Every time some new console comes out people say computers gaming will die. Im sure many ere remember when the original xbox came out and people said a pc would never surpass it in graphics. Of course we all know how long that lasted.

Every time major new pc hardware comes out people say pc gaming is dead or its too expensive. Well you don?t have to have bleeding edge hardware. I just picked up a x1900AIW for $125 at comp usa closing sale. My dell just cost me $200 to get the upgraded 7900. This gives me excellent graphics.

Also people tend to say ?Why spend $1000 to game when you can buy a console for $400?. This is just nuts. The simple answer is a PC, even a gaming rig, is used for far more than gaming. I love to game but its still what I spend the minority of my time doing. I don?t personally know anyone who doesn?t also use their computer for homework, ebay, internet, message boards, etc. Im sure there are people out there but 99% are multi use machines. If you are on here you obviously use yours for something besides gaming as well. I, like many and perhaps you, need to have a PC anyway. My graphics card is the only part of my pc that is upgraded so I can game. This added $200 to the price of my pc (geforce 7900). Most people don?t need a multi card solution with 6 gigs of ram to get that extra 10 fps. Already you are seeing the mid range cards equaling or bettering the xbox 360 in graphics. There will also always be decent mid range graphics cards as well (again for economics). You also don?t need to replace them all the time. My last card lasted me 3 years and it can still play HL@ and other modern games with decent detail.

Every time there is a new OS people claim its not game friendly. We went through that with 98,me,and xp. Bugs are improved and code is streamlined.

I would say most home pc?s are used for gaming at least sometimes. This may be from simple flash games to the latest FPS. This isn?t to say that there will be 1000 developers of games for the PC like consoles, there never has been, but there will always be someone making good games. Consoles have always had more developers but they also have TONS of ultra crappy games. Also with consoles becoming more like stripped down PC?s it has become easier to port console games which save money in development costs.

I have a dreamcast with 85+ games and an xbox with 60+ games. I still do most of my gaming on a pc. My Xbox actually hasn?t been touched in a month, I game on my pc almost every day.

Bah Ronin- c'mon give me something more than that. Especially with the specs in your sig it seems you have the means to upgrade to whatever it takes to game the latest games with all the eyecandy. Doesn't have to be a novel or anything, but 2 words....

Yawn. I think I've been seeing the prediction of PC gaming's demise since Nintendo came out with their console in 1983.

The author sounds like a computer noob who has just faced the prospect of his first computer upgrade. How cute.

The answer to his dilema is the Midrange Buyer's Guide, for those secure enough in their masculinity not to need the flashiest toy on the block.

Yeah that Midrange Buyer's Guide is great for people that don't mind chugging along at 19-30 fps in Fear with that 7600GS and 1 gig of ram at "low" 1280x960 resolutions.
