The Death Of Over The Air TV!!

DTV Date Set
House and Senate approve digital broadcast date.
by Gerry Block

February 2, 2006 - The date for the official switch of all television broadcasting from analog to digital has been set by the House and Senate. February 17, 2009 will be the last day analog television broadcasts will be made. The bill will also set up a $1.5 billion fund to provide two $40 vouchers per household for use in purchasing digital-to-analog set-top converter boxes for TV owners that do not own compatible televisions.

Both the date and the amount of the converter-box fund are compromises between widely differing dates and dollar amounts separately proposed by the House and Senate. President Bush must sign the bill before all is set in stone, however, it is generally expected that he will do so.

The bill directs the FCC to begin auctioning the frequency spectrum freed by the transition beginning January 28, 2008. It is expected that revenue from the auction will range from $10-30 Billion for the government. Next-generation wireless technologies including mobile broadband, video, and WiMax are expected to make use of the new spectrum space.

Yup, you read it right

It's not death of Over the Air TV, just OTA ANALOG. I for one, welcome it. Digital ahoy!

BTW, this is probably a repost 😉

Maybe I'm being pessimistic... but it seems like somehow the companies will be able to use this to once again screw the consumer.

How can a Digital signal be broadcast over the air? I don't think it will be digital when it reachs the homes if it is broadcasted over the air.

No problem for people to go and buy a new TV. It's only money. Heck, Dubya and the boys seem able to find as much as they need to supply all their freinds with plenty of it.

It is. We have had it for a couple of years in the UK.

I have a set top box that is DVB and uses a regular Antenna. Why do you think that only analogue signals can pass through antennae? I'm using WiFi right now.....

The point he is trying to make is that a digital signal still has a 'analog' carrier. Digital would imply the broadcast is on/off.... not true. Its analog until the A/D process 🙂

/\/\/\/\/\/\\/\ <-|||||->-----[A/D Box]=============={TV}
(free space) (antenna) (coax)(HD Tuner) (digital signal!)(HDTV)

It's still a digital signal so it's a moot point.

It's funny how the feds used to guard the spectrum, now they sell it to the highest bidder.

I for one will be glad and sad when we shut down the analog transmitters.
My employer has 16 of them
I will probably be at the local site when it happens.

But look on the bright side.
That's a whole lot of power savings

BTW
We have been on the air with digital since 96

I dislike Bush as much as the next guy, but that is just an incredibly ignorant statement.
The federal government is subsidising the purchase of converters for those who don't want to buy new TVs. The sale of the analog spectrum will more than pay for the program. Now whether grandma knows where to get one of those boxes and how to install it remains to be seen.

All signal transmission (including the signals in your cpu) are 'analogue'. Storage on your hdd is analogue (if you don't think this is true, try researching how data recovery after overwriting works😉

It's a digital signal with an analogue carrier.

I don't know. For some reason I just can't comprehend that a digital signal can be transmitted over the airwaves at least in the quality I associate with digital. When I think digital, i think hardwired components like coax cables and optical cables for digital sound. Never have I thought of a wireless connection for digital sound or picture. I guess its the future.
