Exactly 1 year ago today (october 5 2000) I bought a hercules Geforce 2 MX for $179 canadian. Oh the games we played... Quake 3, sacrifice, tribes 2, Max Payne, Wolfenstein test to name a few. I even put in a little fan myself and overclocked him. It's been the best card a guy could ask for, but i think it's time he went away :(

What should replace it? I was thinking Raedon 8500 for 2 reasons...

#1) A bit cheaper than geforce3 and a tiny performace advantage
#2) I fell the need to support a canadian company.

Any thoughts? Are there cards coming out in the next year i should wait for?

If i got a 8500, would that be sufficient to play planetside, star wars galaxies, doom3 and quake 4, DNF, unreal 2 and team fortress 2(if it ever comes out)?

thanks guys!

*put his geforce 2mx in a shoe box*

A faster board will not give you better performance if you have a low end system... Make sure you system can do its share of the work and then the 8500 would be a great solution. Otherwise it may not gain you any performance increase over your MX.

It doesn't take much of a system to max out a GF MX... they sucked. The worst 3D card out there.

My condolences. My card is also dying as it only really works in 2d now. I have already made the move to replace it with the Radeon 8500, and think you should too. Even if you have a low end system I think you will be happy with a Radeon.

Actually i'm soon upgrading to a t-bird 1.4 \ 256 megs ram, so my new system should be able to take advantage of wichever card i get.

A year ago, they were cheap, decent performance, and popular. It was the only card alot of us on a budget could afford and it delivered.

EDIT: Typo

I'm still running my original TNT/1 16meg from 1998. Running smooth today even. Been overclocked this entire time.. I love the little guy! He works sooo hard for me, and always gives me 100%..
