SO what are the quantities involved, and what are the quantities sold of $200 9800 Pro cards?
"flying off the shelves" doesn't mean much if each retailer has an allotment of 3 cards every 2 weeks and sells 50 9800 Pro cards in the same time.

The reason behind this is that the price doesn't really matter to most of the people buying them right now, and because places are only getting a few of the cards in at a time, so flying off the shelves isn't quite correct. They are selling out all over the place, but since the quantities are so low that they aren't really selling that many cards.
And yes, prices shouldn't be this high. But if you consider that the GPU's on these new cards are as powerful as high end processors and includes 256 MB of super fast RAM then it kinda puts it into perspective. Then include the fact that the 6800 has an onboard video processor which would cost probably at least $100 if you bought a stand alone one.
When demand is far greater than supply, prices go up.

MHO here. I could buy an 800XT right now if I wanted to, but I don't b/c it absolutely KILLS me to see my "$500 videocard" at Newegg for $250 about 6 weeks later. 🙁 The markup is just stupid. Heck, I'm still using my Voodoo 3000 PCI in my server b/c I paid so damn much for it years ago that I don't want it to go to waste! 😱
I do envy those that have that much disposable cash that it just doesn't matter much to them.
I can understand the logic though. Buy bleeding edge, be first kid on the block with one, sell it a month later for about 90% of what you paid for it. Not bad, I guess.

I got in on that $299 6800GT deal at Best Buy. My logic, even as only a casual gamer, is that it will last me a solid 2 years and will fetch about half what I paid for it at that point. My 9500 Pro with 3.0ns memory will get me over half what I paid for it when I sell it in a week or two.
Also, I think we'll see a much slower increase in video card performance the next few years than we've seen the past few. I think some practical limits are being reached so these new cards with a significant leap over the current top of the line could buy you well over two years.

How about paying $609 PLUS $8.00 shipping (newegg) for a 6800U, using it for a week and "giving in" only to sell it for $700 because someone wanted it more than yourself?

Personally, I think anyone who spends that kind of money on a video card is stupid -- unless they simply have too much money and don't know what to do with it.
No matter how you turn it, buying the top of the line video card at a super expensive price to get the best performance in games that don't even exist yet is idiotic. You have to find the sweet spot to get a good balance between price and performance and your needs.

Since i haven't bought a video card in two years except a 9600pro for 150 I decided to splurge on a ati800xt platinum for $435.00 to my door. Excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me for simply wanting a faster video card and for once getting a top of line, lol. Oh well, back to my km266Via xp2400 machine. lol

At least paying $500 for a video card that's twice as fast as a $200 Radeon 9800Pro/Geforce 5900XT is smarter than paying $500 for a 10% faster Radeon 9800XT/Geforce 5950U 😀
I'm just pissed off that I could have built my new system back in March. Waiting has gotten me NOTHING better. Prices haven't dropped. New GPUs are (sort of) out, but they cost so much more that they're not really worth it. I was waiting for Prescott back in Feb/March, thinking it would have the same kind of huge boost we got from Willemete (SP) > Northwood, and thinking the new GPUs would be out in April, and would be available in $300 models, and AMD's Socket 939 would be out.
Now it's almost July and I have nothing to show for it :/

I spent $240 Cdn for my 9800 Pro, the most i've ever spent on a graphics card, & until the new generation od nVidia & ATI cards go down to around $350ish (Cdn), i'm not getting one.

500 dollars for anything computer related is pretty irellavant. You can always get something almost as good for half the price.
