Most boring and annoying use of TV time, EVER. I don't get why NBC and other networks (like the CBC here in Canada) make such a HUGE fuss about this "sport". Personal stories. Behind the scenes looks at what it takes to become a skating pro. The hardships skating stars have overcome. I can't believe anybody actually wants to watch this stuff, there's nothing very artistic or engaging about it at all.

And the judging! Hasn't it always pretty much been the sentimental favourite winning - either that or the last person performing who wins? IMO, anything that needs to be "judged" as the only means of scoring is not a sport whatsoever. Someone start a petition or something to drastically cut down on the airtime figure skating takes up, this calumny of our prime-time Olympics coverage must end!

I agree that olympic figure skating is especially boring. Much more so than professional or even other amatur shows.
But still, it is one of the largest ratings draws in the winter olympics. It kind of has that legacy thing going. People have been watching it for so many years. They just come back every four years watching figure skating. I know many people who watch figure skating only once every four years for the olympics.

I dont think it should be in the olympics, but its not as bad as you make it out to be...

My mom loves watching it and sometimes when I've got nothing better to do, I'll watch for a bit as well. Some of the things these skaters do is quite impressive. I've seen video's of Elvis in his prime and trust me, it can be fun to watch. He can do flips for christs sake!

I actually don't mind watching the females skate... nothing perverted or anything, it just looks graceful. But i can't watching the guys skate, or the couple skates. When that Elvis dude gets on the rink, i just want to hurl. Guys on a rink should have a stick and be trying to knock each other on the ass. Not see how many times they can twirl in the air.

regardless if you like the sport or not it will be played on all the networks carrying the olympics. in the recent past figure skating has brought the highest ratings in out of all the olympic sports. many people watch (not just old people and girls as someone posted above me). the olympics bring in a lot of money and figure skating brings in a lot of it (even though many of the other sports are great too).

Actually although it is painfully boring I'd rather watch it than a game of baseball or basketball any day of the week and I sh*t you not.

Yeah, it's all quite sad. There's an uber-super-dooper NHL all-star tournament going on in
North America and it's getting relegated to a much smaller arena in SLC thanks to figure
skating.

Basketball's not that bad, though the pro-bball people who say there's too many penalties and stoppage of play in hockey have to be on crack, there's more whistles in basketball than anything. Baseball...even when the Jays were in the Series I only watched the last few innings of each game. Baseball = snoozefest, but at least it's a fair game to play. Figure skating, on the other hand:

Somewhat well-known skater from Norway performs, gets a near-perfect score.
Same thing for the next 5 or 6 skaters.
Artistic, powerful but not well-known Russian skater performs brilliantly and gets an almost-exactly-perfect score.
Last performer, the most-hyped person in the event whose life story has been shown on NBC a dozen times already performs only mediocrely and just barely wins. Everyone cheers, and I vomit.
