I personally think the Xbox 360 hype is WAY out of hand. I am not a console gamer but I enjoy the benefits of having a modified unit for the multimedia capability. It simply plays all media formats I have ever thrown at it.

Well, I stumbled across this article. I think many people who are waitin gofr the Xbox 360 to be better "understood" might be interested:

The cracking begins ...

Nothing to see yet besides an almost useless memory dump:

---
In the text file with the extracted data, the PI Coders admit that not much can be done with the data.

"You can't run these dumps yet, but you will be able to sooner or later," reads the information file.

The crackers have not managed to get the data off game disks, instead they have dug out the version of the game that the Xbox 360 creates when gamers start playing.

The crackers said they were releasing the raw data to help other hacking groups start the task of working out how the Xbox 360 tries to stop piracy.

"So the first task is done," wrote Team PI in the information files. "We hope this encourages all hackers, coders and crackers out there to take up the challenge."

Using the raw data could prove a challenge because the extraction has left intact the protection systems that ensure that copies will not run on an Xbox 360.

Ya know, if MS simply allowed the 360 to play video from non Media Center PCs and in formats other than WMV, MPEG1, and MPEG2 then they'd really kill alot of the desire to hack the 360. Only the game piraters would care at that point....well, and those folks that would mod a toaster into a nuclear reactor just because it was fun to them.

At least it didn't get cracked within 24 hours like MS Genuine Advantage did.

Maybe I reading it wrong, or maybe it's different this time, but how times hard this before:

He said that hardware on the system only allows Microsoft certified and signed programs to run on the console. This meant that copied games would not be recognised by the system and would not run.

edit: Wasn't this also said about the Microsoft Windows XP's theme files?

Microsoft loses $100+ on the console, so more sales of it to people running "game backups" or just using it as a media server offers them no benefit.

i cant wait to see how fast sony can spin!

They're already getting out of hand. One of the best was one of the Sony VPs saying that the HD era doesn't truly begin until the PS3 is released with its support for 1080p. So, all those people who have been buying Sony LCDs, Plasmas, etc for the last few years really don't have HDTVs according to this VP. :D

Only a matter of time, the only reason I bought my Xbox was after the cracking was well established and all the media center apps started showing up, I use that thing waaaaay more as a media player than to play games, but now that I have a XP Media Center hooked up to my HDTV I don't even use my Xbox.

" The non-standard format of Xbox 360 DVDs also means that a PC DVD drive will not read them either."

i hope the team behind Sega's GD-ROM is not behind this. rofl.
why do companies even bother trying to dispute the 1337 hackers and crackers and say that there are multiple levels of protection?!?!?! lol, it just make them more 1337 when they do crack it.

Oh btw ... that bolded stuff there is %100 BS.

They ripped the data directly off the disc. WTF are they talking about ... "dug out the version of the game that the XBox 360 creates when gamers play " ...

that is the dumbest thing i've ever heard in my life lol.

uhhhh, as in they pulled the data loaded on the hard drive and not directly from the disk.

if so, you probably have to wait for 2 hours for the game to install the first time you run it? face it its a 20gb drive, it can act as a cache but not a install repository for all your games (unless we mod it! ROFL the irony!)

This is a VERY small step to cracking it... but it seems like the media, which often is not trained in technical matters, latched onto this and is sensationalizing it.
