The CPU GPU war, it began with AMD planes to merge with ATI, and now...

No war. No news. Intel has been the largest graphics chip manufacturer in the world for years (the vast majority of computers sold use integrated Intel graphics), and has slowly bur surely increased the performance of each generation of graphics. The new GMA3000 is supposed to be pretty nice for integrated graphics, so they'd be expected to need to be looking at pretty "high performance" designs for the next generation.

They tried the discrete video chip world once, it didn't work out so well because it wasn't much more than integrated graphics performance on an AGP card, but I'm sure they'd love to get some action from people looking to upgrade their older integrated boards with a cheap add-in card. It's been rumored for some time that Intel was looking toward a new discrete graphics chip.

No war. No news.
Let me ask you a few questions:

We got Intel, NVIDIA and AMD/ATI.

Which one of the three companies has the best track record in high quality drivers?
Which one of the three companies offer open source driver for their chipset and GPUs?

Which one of the three companies has the most advanced (and high capacity) manufacturing capability?

Seems looks like big news to me.

Edit
I deliberately didn?t talk about logic design, just in case anyone was wondering.

Another interesting tidbit of information (from the inq unfortuntely)

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=33812

Intel signed up most of the 3Dlabs team
WE HEARD the rather interesting news that the mighty Intel quietly acquired most of the 3Dlabs graphic team. Back on the 24th February this year, 3Dlabs and its mother company Creative Labs announced plans to "refocus" 3Dlabs' interests on mobile and handheld market.

I'm still not sure that Intel have the ability to catch up with ATI and Nvidia. They've got the resources obviously but I'd say this is quite a specialised field and most of the best engineers are already going to be working at either NV or ATI.

Intel has been planning a GPU on a CPU, this is part of the reason AMD bought ATI. Just cheaper intergrated solutions.

I would love for their to be a third player, even if it is Intel.

Two reasons:
1) More competition
2) It would pretty much ensure that AMD will not drop ATI's discrete GPU development.
