Methinks this forum misses something. Because a private citizen may have a right to keep their tax records private, but anyone running for high public office is normally expected to make their taxes public.
At the same time, IRS tax audits, are a necessary tool to make sure a given individual is not cheating on taxes. And that those individuals are not using illegal tax shelters that the IRS often can't detect without an informant.
In the case of Mitt Romney, such an informant has already come forward, which gives the IRS important clues on what trees to bark up.
After which we can say there is something repugnant in allowing the IRS to be used for political purposes.
But still, if the IRS audits Mitt Romney's disclosed and non-disclosed tax returns, and the IRS finds massive illegal tax shelters, ole Mittens could spend the rest of his life in Prison.
