He's a complex man, really I'd love to know him better. I bet his 2011 return gets refiled for his correct 9.something tax rate within 9 month's. I wonder if that will be public record or not since he won't be running.

if you're a private citizen would you want your tax records to be public?

Yea, let them all be open. Having them be hidden only allows those to try and cheat the system IMO.

I like this logic. Keep your doors open for us to inspect what you are doing at home. Having them locked only allows those trying to break the law to do so. You arent breaking the law so why should you care if we come and verify it at our discretion?

Taxs are already open to the Gov, a house is not unless by court order.
Are you really that dumb to not know the differance between private and what is all ready in Gov hands?

Then why did you make the comment to have them all "open"? Open to whom?

Is english your 2nd lang? Open to all as its a Federal Gov record.
Sooner more of the Fed Gov is open the more it can be watched for waste and fraud.

Taxes are kept private for obvious reasons regardless if they are a govt record. Hence the reason why I used the example of your home. The logic that only cheaters need to keep it hidden is the same as people saying you shouldnt worry when the govt is in your home. Because only criminals have something to hide. The idea the public would be able to pick up on fraud on people's taxes that the IRS, a trained organization with expertise in the field couldnt is also stupidly naive.

The paperwork to amend his return was probably signed & post dated before he released the information for the election.

All perfectly legal, or at least legal wrt what anybody can prove.

Therein lies the problem.

Assuming Romney didn't immediately file the amended tax return after releasing the pre-amended one to the public.

Methinks this forum misses something. Because a private citizen may have a right to keep their tax records private, but anyone running for high public office is normally expected to make their taxes public.

At the same time, IRS tax audits, are a necessary tool to make sure a given individual is not cheating on taxes. And that those individuals are not using illegal tax shelters that the IRS often can't detect without an informant.

In the case of Mitt Romney, such an informant has already come forward, which gives the IRS important clues on what trees to bark up.

After which we can say there is something repugnant in allowing the IRS to be used for political purposes.

But still, if the IRS audits Mitt Romney's disclosed and non-disclosed tax returns, and the IRS finds massive illegal tax shelters, ole Mittens could spend the rest of his life in Prison.
