The correct way to monitor the temp of the CPU

I bought three digital thermomentors from millisec.com. What is the most effective way to monitor the CPU temp? I have one of the sensors placed at the base of the HS, actually secured under the HS clip. Is that the best likely spot to get the most effective reading? Any other suggestions? I used the A7V hardware monitor in the BIOS, it only seems to yield a result of 44 C, no more, no less. Even in windows when I use the ASUS Probe, by the time I get into windows the probe is reporting a temp of 51 to 52 C. I assume this is wayyyyy wrong. With these new digital therms I'm getting readings from 15 C to 42 C.

You need to place the probe so the tip of the probe touches the side of the core, then install the heatsink. Do not place it directly on top of the core, as it will crush the probe, along with the heatsink not fitting flush.

One more question. There is a plastic sheath around the probe. Should that sheath touch the core or should I use a pair of scissors perhaps to trim the sheath off so the tip of the wire touches the core?

I have mine secured with a piece of frag (thermal) tape. Here is a picture of mine. Be very careful to closely monitor the temperature after you install it. I had to remove the shrink tubing collar around the probe to get it so my heatsink would still fit flush.

EDIT: I could not get mine any closer or the probe wires would not let my heatsink fit flush. The tip of the plastic touches the core, and gives me pretty accurate readings compared to a test using an accurate thermocouple. It would be better to trim the plastic some. I did not do it because of the reason I just said. I am happy with the results.

Lets say I take a drop from my Circuit Works conductive pen, and secure the probe to the top side of my PGA (not shorting any of the other buses of course), do you think that would work?

What would be the max operating temperature for an Athlon T'Bird at 1.85v? Or what limit would you feel comfy with?

Those therms come within usually one to two degrees exact temp....the ones from millisec that is. I'm sure there are more expensive ones out there, but for the money and all practical purposes, the ones at millisec work great. I tested the eye of my oven between these therms from millisec, a standard home oral therm, and some type of idustrial nursing therm my wife uses (she works in the ER here in Tucson) that is suppose to read temps up to .0001 percent on the money. All were within .5 degrees of each other. $14, you can't beat it!
