The console that I think will come out on top...

... will be the first console to create a stable, working, Multiplayer Internet gaming experience. This is something that no console has ever done, and it will be a huge leap for the console industry. I think the first console that can pull this off will win this round of console wars. Sony made an official release of their plans for network play a little while back (can't find the link), and Microsoft has it's eyes set on XBox Live. I haven't heard anything about Nintendo's efforts to make network gaming a reality, but I think if they aren't thinking about it, they are sorely disabling themselves in the future console markets.

Any opinions on this?

I could be, and probably am wrong. But i don't think online feature will make an impact as big as everyone is thinking. Sure, it'll eventually come around and be a standard to just about any game and console. But as of right now I don't think Nintendo will hurt too much if they don't push for it aggressively with the GameCube. Just my opinion.

As far as online games go, I think it will be a long time before the PC is replaced by a console as king.

Online console gaming is THE killer app. Of course, the online service will need to be:

* Stable
* Navigable
* Cheap (add-on to broadband in most cases)

and, most of all

* SUPPORTED!!!!

Computer are / will always be the only popular way of gaming online. FFXI will be an attempt to go that direction, but you'll see that it will fail.

Consoles are meant for Home Entertainment on a single television. There will be no champion in that manner.

I also believe that console gaming on the internet will be a long ways off. First becuase it is so expensive and second because because in most cases a broadband connection will be needed.

On another note I think it sucks to be gamming on line and having a slow connection being a reason for doing so poorly in a game. I really like playing single player so i really don't care if it makes it or not. I do think it takes the developer away from making single play better since they have to develop and spend resources to make internet playing worth while.

That would be weird though, unless they added a keyboard, you wouldn't be able to type or be like "p\/\/|\|3|) b10tc|-|" after you frag someone. That wouldn't be fun. And there's not enough interaction, with a keyboard, you have like, 104 keys you can use. Gamepads are kinda limited in that aspect, so that would be a problem.

Someone has got to get online kicking if MS doesnt try now, its not likely to take of till sometime after the next generation of consoles. Online gaming isnt just going to happen on consoles, its going to have to start somewhere and build up, this is what MS is doing. If no one did what MS has done, it wouldnt get done till the next generation. Instead MS has laid the building blocks to bring online gaming to the mainstream for the next generation of consoles.

Get my point? Its not going to happen overnight, its going to take years, and MS is smart and laying the building blocks.. it wouldnt matter next generation of no one was pushing the issue this generation...

I get what you're saying. And I agree. But this thread is about which console in this generation will come out on top. Some thinks it will be determind by online gaming. I just think online gaming won't be a huge factor with this generation of consoles, so therefore Nintendo isn't going to fall to far behind if they don't push it for the GameCube. Now, if they don't start an online feature in the future that will be different.

The console that will come out on top is already on top.

Online console gaming is 4-5 years away. Until then it will merely be an interesting fad.

Exactly. Just like word of the 64DD for N64 was a fad, which was never brought out because the Sega Genesis 32x blew so much. And online gaming w/the DC was pretty cool for like an hour, then it got super boring.
