The problem occured a week ago. The system has worked very well since the purchase date, on March 2001.
Well, my friend was on the internet as usual (on Morpheus to be exact). Then Windows hanged up, then he had to reboot. He rebooted, and after 10 minutes he was on the Internet again, the computer froze again. He rebooted the machine again, and then he couldn't boot up anymore.
You know, at boot time when the computer detects the CPU, RAM and IDE drives, you can see the "brand and model number" of the IDE drives. Since this problem, the "name and model number" of the hard disk is now "|/ |/ |/ |/" (this is supposed to look like triangles, in fact we just see white triangles like that instead of the "Fujitsu XXXX" model number...). It's written "Primary master hard disk fail" under the IDE "brand names". After that, the system just stop to boot there. The debug leds on the motherboard (Soyo SY-7VCA2) does the following pattern : "X-X-L-L" (X=off, L=lit). In the manual the pattern says :
<< The checksum for the decompressed code is calculated and checked. The checksum is calculated by adding all data bytes together and storing the result in the BIOS ROM. If the calculated checksum is different from the checksum stored in the ROM, the code stored in the FLASH ROM is corrupted. >>
I tried to use his HDD on another computer, and the HDD seems to be failed because it's even not detected on the other computer.
I tried also to use another HDD on his computer. Windows loads OK in safe mode, but it hangs up at the middle of the boot time if I boot in "normal" mode.
Do you know what could be wrong on his computer, what we should do ?
