Compassionate, racist and homophobic all at once.
A true renaissance man.
Racist? Wait, what? You're calling Paul racist? Sigh...

Honestly I have a lot of problems with Paul on the racist newsletters. I don't consider him a racist at all, but I think a leader should jump on such blatant racism with both feet. That said, I largely agree with you on Paul's positions; I agree with some of them, but many of them I think would either be disastrous for the country, or would simply make the country a place I would not want to live. I don't think any country can survive open borders and unrestrained immigration, I don't think charities can adequately care for the poor and disabled in a modern society, and I think government can and sometimes must intervene in private transactions even though philosophically I'm against such intervention in broad principle. I also disagree with his stance on gay marriage, which to me is a violation of libertarian principles. I think the federal government should be protecting rights, not devolving them to the states. I have a visceral attraction to the idea of isolationism, pulling back from our constant intervention, while also recognizing the dangers inherent in isolationism.I guess you could say I think Paul's policies won't work and will lead to disaster if fully implemented. I think he raises very good points and there are a lot of issues with our government. If he shows willingness to step back and rationally change things I would vote for him in a heartbeat. People are smearing Paul for allegedly being a racist instead of rationally discussing the issues.
There really aren't very many honest politicians like Paul, IMHO, and we need more politicians with integrity like him, regardless of which way you lean politically.
And thanks for keeping the discussion civil with DrPizza. We don't see a lot of civility in P&N these days...
