Why don't we spell phonetically? There is no reason to spell thru through. There is no reason for their, there and they're. No reason at all.

What gets me is when people say they have something "for sell." Ugh!

"Thru" is an accepted alternate spelling, though I almost never use it. They can print MUCH larger on signage and roadways when the words are short.

That's true... ever usage of the word should be spelled "ther"

dat thur iz da drive thru

Oxfordford dictionary will soon say that "da" is an acceptable replacement for "the". I mean common, bootylicious made it in.

EDIT: does 'common' drive you nuts as well?

I do use "thru" when it's casual/personal correspondence, usually when I'm on IM. I don't think I'm using it because I'm lazy though, it's more because I feel that it conveys a sense of closeness to the person because I know that the person won't care anyway.

Which also means that I would never use that in an e-mail that is for business use, or with people that I don't know very well.

Bottom line - I'm fine with it being a new word for casual use, but against the idea of it replacing the original word entirely regardless of usage.
