The Colors and Whites. Do they need to be separated?

A couple years ago after moving out of my parent's house I had to figure out how to do laundry. Well since then I just dump everything and jesus into the machine and pour in the detergent and hit go

Should I be separating out my whites? Also is it whites or just anything light colored?

I mix everything, but you have to be careful. Some colors will bleed, especially when new, and if you don't know the types that bleed, it's better to keep them separate.

I use nothing but laundry detergent. No bleach, no softeners, no dryer sheets, nothing.

If you want your banana shirts to stay white, you'd better separate.

This. You can get away with mixing them once and a while but it you make a habit of it your whites are going to start looking gray. Also, don't use bleach unless the tag on the clothing specifically mentions that you can. As long as you use a decent detergent your whites should stay pretty white anyways.

I'm sorry you left home before you were ready for the real world and, your parents didn't teach you the basics.

Separate the whites and colors. Bright colors and permanent press also need to be separate. Whites get hot and optional bleach. Colors get warm. Briaght colors and permanent press get cold. Enzyme based presoaks are your friend. Use fabric softener instead of dryer sheets. Fold your laundry not, because you're a neat freak but, because it forces you to inspect your clothes.

I've never used fabric softener. I tried the stupid sheets made everything feel waxy. I'll have to try the liquid stuff

Depends. IMO, yes, separate colors and whites to prevent the colors from bleeding onto the whites, but not all whites should be bleached with chlorine bleach. Read the labels.

I'm the laundry bitch in our house, colors are separated...dark colors, light colors, reds & pink colors. Denim is washed separately from other colors.
Whites are separated into chlorine bleach and no-chlorine bleach. White shirts with silk screened stuff should not be bleached.

Awesome. Thanks guys

IMO, the liquid softeners are more waxy than the dryer sheets.

If you want my method that's never let me down...

Underwear/Socks on hot
Shirts on warm
Pants/Thick sweatshirts on warm

These are three separate groups. I don't use a dryer or wash stuff other than the first group on hot because shrinking clothes makes me fucking pissed.

Add a small amount of white vinegar to the rinse cycle compartment instead of using liquid fabric softener or dryer sheets. Seriously. It sounds like it would make your clothes smell like vinegar, but it won't unless you way overdo it. Cheaper, works as well, and you wont be rubbing carcinogens on your body all day long.

Dunno about undershirts, I don't generally wear white undershirts for much. That's a quest you must complete on your own

Colors generally bleed when they're newish. Isn't usually a problem after a few washes.

Well being one person doing that many loads of laundry would be terrible for my water / power bill.

The number one "secret" to doing laundry is read the fucking label. Do not assume the correct amount for one product is the same for another.

True. For a single person, you can probably get away with a single colored load...except for reds/pinks.

(we all know you wear pink...I mean "raspberry." )

I do everything warm wash, cold rinse. Delicates, and fine wools get hand washed in cold water.

Once the reds have been washed a few times, they're probably OK with the other colored clothes...or your denims.

if it's a new piece of clothing, it does not get washed with other clothes. Otherwise, it all gets washed together. If I need two loads, I separate underwear and sicks from everything else.

i don't separate mine. every once in awhile it bites me in the ass tho, my towels are pink now. but nobody else sees them outside of the family. my wife of all people is the only one that seems to care.

i do clothes in cold/cold, delicate and towels on um, hot/cold? or hot/warm? or something. heavy or whatever the towel setting is. it's worked fine for the 25 years i've been washing my own clothes. although i will admit i was never properly taught how to wash clothes, and my neighbor told me to use the settings i do. and i don't think he knew what he was doing either.

also, i have red t-shirts i wash with my other stuff, and that hasn't seemed to bleed yet. maybe my wife buys special detergent or something, but i doubt it.
