I'm excited to see War of the Worlds this summer, even though I'm almost 100% positive it's going to be another Independence Day with big explosions and little else. So, in preparation for it, I popped in my copy of The War of the Worlds and proceeded to get chills all over again. There's something strangely unsettling about this recording... I dont know what it is but it bothers me quite a bit. I remember hearing this as a younger lad and getting frightened whenever the Martians yelled "Oooooo-AHHHHHH!". The narrator does a superb job of setting the mood and has a great voice for this.

Of course, after giving it a full listen to again, I realized that no blockbuster made today could even come close to matching the pure dread that this was meant to invoke and does so wonderfully. It's disturbing but in the end, utterly fantastic.

Fear the heat ray.

Good gravy. I saw that line and I thought for a second that someone finally went far enough off the deep end to actually try and produce this.

But, alas.

Well, I am close to it... but produce what? Post the whole script?

I agree Modeps in that War of the Worlds will probably be yet another unremarkable Hollywood craptacular where the special effects team tries to outdo the last blockbuster's. I surely hope I am wrong however because War of the Worlds is one of my favorite books. I can never stop thinking of what they did to Around the World in 80 Days last year. *sigh*

Yeah, I mean it was intended to be a broadway-style musical, the problem is you would need to be both obscenely wealthy and obscenely insane in order to pull it off as specified in the book, and doing it on a conventional stage would be damned near impossible seeing as the tripods are supposed to be like 80 feet tall...or was is it bigger? Well, bigger than the proscenium on most stages in any case. So you would need to do it in like a stadium.

You would need to engineer a portable stage with flies that go up that high.
Engineer the tripods which would likely be gargantuan combinations of robot and puppet.

It's insanity.

However, should you decide to make an attempt, I will throw in my own theatrical talents plus my formidable network of amateur performers, techs, stagehands and engineers.

I have hopes for this, Spielberg tends to do a good job with movies so I am hopeful that this will be a decent film. Now I need to hear the original to see what all the fuss is about.

Maybe its because of your age? Older people can appreciate this more because they were a Kid when they saw it first. Kind of like how some of the younger kids I talk to today can't understand why I love Star Wars so much. Its because of the feeling I got when I found out Luke's father was Vader, among other things of course. And getting that at the perfect age.

For me, a radio recording from the 50's doesn't invoke anything in me. But then again, maybe that was because I read the book, and feel that nothing will ever come close to that? Yep, thats it.

Still, you need to understand that TV has spoiled people. They don't really have an imagination any longer, and thats why they need something like a movie to scare them when a radio show did the same thing 50 or so years ago.

This is NOT the Orson Welles radio broadcast. This can best be described as a rock opera. It never went on stage as far as I know, just recorded in the studio with some great performers including Justin Hayward (The Moody Blues).

It's great.

Awesome stuff :)

I've got this on the CarPC, I often stick it on when driving a long distance at night, it's so great being blasted out at high volumes! :D
