Do these things kick ass or what?

Things you can do with a cast iron pan:
-Oven cooked steaks
-Deep dish pizza
-fajitas
-hashbrowns
-pie in a pinch
-pan fried tators
-pancakes
-long simmered meals like indian food
and the list goes on...

And to top it off they are virtually indestructable. Forks..knives...pizza cutters...whatever. No teflon coating to be careful with. When you are done cooking just scrape it out, rinse it down and slap a little oil back on it.

My teflon pans have lasted about 3-4 years before my wife destroys them. The cast iron pan I have is older than me and has been passed down to it's third generation.

In the age of $200 Cephalon pans I thought I had to throw a shout out to the cast iron oldies but goodies.

This post brought to you by a heaping plate of hasbrowns, bacon and eggs made up this morning in my beloved cast iron pan. :)

<3 my 12" skillet. I did fried chicken in it last, per an Alton Brown episode. I also learned a great way to prepare brussel sprouts using a skillet. Great to take camping, too.

mosied around the Target cookware section hoping they'd have a cast iron skillet; unfortunately the closest they have is cast aluminum. then again, now that i have amazon prime I can get a cast iron skillet shipped home for free...

I love my cast iron skillet. They're relatively cheap, versatile, and aren't difficult to take care of. Plus there is so much you can cook in it with no regards to how (stove, oven - whatever).

I used to be of the opinion that the only good steak was one cooked on a bbq. Oh how young and naive I was.

they are excellent for home defense as well, you could kill a fucking elephant with one

Mine is probably too heavy to swing and effectively hit people with.... I'll need to get a smaller utility pan for home defense!

steak on a grill still beats steak on a cast iron pan, any day of the week. Done it both ways and prefer the open flame taste to flat iron taste.

Use my cast iron for lots and lots of things. I'm surprised no one has mentioned pineapple upside down cake. Awesome.

Or fried cornbread in cast iron. Damn good eats.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to convince any of my friends about using cast iron. They are all germaphobes and think that since you don't use soap to clean it you'll die from some horrible infection

the open flame taste is okay occasionally, but I'd prefer my steaks to have the inner juiciness that the cast iron method provides.

I use my cast iron skillet for everything except cooking eggs.

Fajitas - heck yeah
Anything with burgers (taco meat, manwich...) - heck yeah
Bake some Chicken in the oven - heck yeah

Steaks I sometimes sear on the skillet then finish them to a nice med rare on the grill.

Also, the skillet is great for re-heating steak. I usually have left over from outback, heat the skillet to med-low, throw a little butter on there and it brings a steak back to life. Anyone who re-heats steak in the microwave is committing a food crime.

LOL, that never crossed my mine.

After cleaning, I usually put it back on the stove on high to really get it hot, then just turn if off and let it cool. Getting it to 400 degrees will kill a lot more stuff than a little soap does.
