with the description you gave about the camera, the one drawback would be the lack of optical zoom, like yoda291 said.

so optical zoom is better than digital zoom??

the canon s230 has 2 optical zoom and 3 digital zoom.. so isn't the total also 5??

no I think you take product of optical and digital zoom not the sum.

so 3*2 = 6x from what i understand.

No. Just ignore the digital zoom when camera shopping. Pretend like it doesn't exist.

look at it this way...if you own ANY variant of corelpaint, photoshop, paintshop pro, or just any imaging program with a zoom tool...digital zoom is useless. Also, at last check, canon sometimes bundles some sort of imaging program with the camera.

Digital zoom is pretty worthless.. sort of like clicking the magnify button in photoshop.

You want optical zoom as it is actually the lens doing the zooming, not a computer chip.

I dont see how a cannon camera could not have optical zoom though.. go check into it some more

Yes, optical zoom is much better. Optical zoom uses a physical lens to zoom, therefore preserving the quality of the image. Digital zoom is akin to blowing something up in Photoshop.
They are not comparable and cannot be "added together" to compare different cameras.

Edit: OK, everyone already said what i just did. 😛

All digital zoom does is crop the pic and enlarge the pixels, thus losing picture quality in the process. Optical zoom is based purely on the lens of the cam and suffers no quality degradation. I don't know a single person on this forum that used the digital zoom with their cams.
