The Canon 18-55mm lens is not bad at all

Well, for football games, I am not sure IS would help you much. You might want to try out the non-IS version since it is slightly better image quality wise than the IS version. If you start shaking alot, try a monopod. IS is better for still objects or slow moving objects. Won't do anything for you in fast moving situations like football games.

It has too much distortion for things like cityscapes, but it's an excellent lens for photographing people. Just the right amount of softness, and it's pleasing. It's no Ziess but it's absolutely worth the money.
