"The Box" Questions. Spoiler warning.

So, I just watched the box. Apart from some awful acting, especially by a no longer hot Cameron Diaz, I have some questions about the plot.

Am I right in assuming that melted face guy was struck by lightening by the Martians? And that it is the Martians conducting tests on humans?

Am I right in assuming that when melted face said someone else would die if you pushed the button, the Cameron Diaz character died because the next people to get the box pushed the button? In other words, if you push the button then melted face man sets you up to be killed with the next person who gets a box and pushes the button?

One thing I have no idea about, is if Diaz and her hubby did not investigate as to who melted face man was, would the crap still have happened to them, or would they just have kept the million and gone on with their lives? Or no matter what they did, if they pushed the button, they would be the person killed as a result of the next button pusher?

I didn't watch the movie, but I read the plot summary on Wikipedia (and realized that it was a terrible movie).

I got the impression that she would have been the next person killed regardless of what else they did, and their story was just one in a series of terrible events that happen to the people who push the button.

A) I have no idea. They never said who was doing these things. They are "the ones who control the lightning" and "his employers". They said it happened while doing Mars-related stuff....but not necessarily that it was Martians.

B) Yes

C) Yes, they still would have died.
