Hello,

Does anyone know how to fix the above mentioned error? Its a very odd case for me.

I did not add or remove any hardware. I had an SSD 'free hanging' in a 3.5 inch bay. It was unstable every once in a while (I assumed it was my cables getting loose because when I reconnected them it was fine) so I purchased a 3.5 -2.5 adapter and placed my SSD in.

Now I'm getting this issue.

I'm confused on two notes.

1) the drive (Samsung 840) was not my primary boot drive. My OS is on another drive.
2) the bios can see both drives, so clearly it is visible.

I'm running Windows 8 Pro. I only have a windows 7 CD, so I can't do a system repair for Win8.
 
I'm afraid yr OS will need repair.

Afterthought: Do you have a function key which will let U get into setup? If so, do that and see if the drive with YR OS is chosen as the boot drive.

Not sure if it changed how it got changed, but gremlins exist. I was visited by some myself today.

Sounds like Windows changed a drive letter on you, or Windows is trying to boot from your SSD. If you can get into BIOS, make sure your OS drive is first in the sequence. You may have to temporarily remove the power from the SSD so it isn't seen.

I only added this as afterthought, cause I assumed he had checked boot sequence in setup. We should never assume.
 
Sorry Vigorising, I was working on getting a Windows 8 cd so I could do the OS repair.

I did check the boot order, my OW drive was still 1st. I also had tried unplugging the SSD, even with just my OS drive and one other old data drive I still get the issue.

I just got my hands on a Windows 8 cd, so I'll be trying that tonight.

Hi Vigorising,

So I got a very odd problem. I put in my Windows 8 disc, and I was able to make it to the Windows CD UI (where it has repair, install etc).

I went in to the repair section, but for some reason the Windows CD could not see my Windows 8 install. It DID see an old Windows 7 install. I used to run Windows 7 before I upgraded. The odd thing is that when id boot my computer, Windows would always see two OSs - Win 7 and Win 8. Win 7 would never actually work, but it was always odd that it saw both of them. The fact that it now sees my Win 7 and not Win 8 OS has to be related. When I tried doing an auto repair in Win 7 it failed. The same thing can be said with system restore points etc - it was always Win7.

Any idea of what I should do? I suppose I could just do a clean install of Windows 8, but id like to just restore what I had if possible.
 
You just nailed the problem. You can't have two OS's active on the same drive. A proper upgrade from 7 to 8 involves deleting 7 and freplacing it with 8. At this poiny, a clean install is probably the best solution.
 
Did you reconnect the SSD when you booted into Windows 8 repairs?

So originally you had Win7 and you upgraded to Win8 on the same drive?

Hello Reven, it also sounds like you upgraded with both hard drives connected, which can reek havoc on the master boot record.

You will most likely want to recover your personal data, wipe the drive, and install Windows with that drive, and only that drive, connected.
