So i do volunteer work with findagrave.com where people put in a request to have a photo taken of one of their ancestors or relatives graves, mostly for genealogy research. if the request happens to be in a cemetery 25 miles from my zip code i will get a email request. I got such a request over the weekend, i had nothing to do so I went out to this graveyard to look for this guy's grave who died in 1902. during my search i found a military headstone with an inscription i had never seen before.

Black Hawk War

So i took a picture of the head stone to google it and learn what the black hawk war was. i found this website that is pretty well researched. hell even a young Abe Lincoln fought in it.

http://lincoln.lib.niu.edu/blackhawk/index.html

here is a pic of the headstone.

Never did find the headstone of the guy i was looking for. either he does not have one or the master burial book the city has is wrong.

That is a pretty fascinating thing to do. I am intrigued.

It is interesting and i enjoy doing it. i had a volunteer help me out in tracking down my mom's sisters grave in Odessa Texas. My aunt was killed on Jan 1 1966 by a car load of drunk teens. Not only did she find the headstone but also dug up the death certificate. i think she worked for the city.... so i updated the findagrave memorial page of her grave with a picture of the headstone about 4 months or so ago.

Last week the findagrave website forward me a email from a person asking who i was because that was her mother... well hly shit a first cousin i never knew existed just contacted me. we talked on the phone for a couple hours on friday. it was really cool.

Cool find. The Black Hawk War is a pretty sad story, one great example of us screwing over the natives, in this case the Sauk.

Abe Lincoln did serve, but IIRC he didn't see action. In his writings he wryly mentions seeing heavy action - against mosquitoes.

It was a big war in 1832 of early Americans vs Indians. The Indians were slaughtering us left and right, using evil witch doctor magic to summon zombies and shrink our soldiers heads. It was looking grim, and one point George Washington was actually sitting in a bunker holding his own revolver to his head, ready to pull the trigger because there was almost no chance of winning.

However, little did George know, but NIKOLA TESLA was nearly finished with a new device. Using quantum fields and fusion generated power, Tesla was able to open a rip in the space time continuum to call for help from the future USA. Due to this crazy time rip, a small unit of fully loaded Black Hawk Helicopters was transported back through time from the year 2000. With the modern firearms and the strategic advantage of the helicopters, we turned the tide and defeated the Satan worshiping Indians, and George Washington was saved from committing suicide.

And that is why it's called the Black Hawk War.

That headstone is in amazing shape for it's age. Guy must have been wealthy to have a nicely carved headstone like that back in those days.
