The bigger problem

The original problem is now preventing me from installing WindowsXP MediaCenter.
I am trying to put together a Media Center PC. I bought an A64 3000+, A8V, 1GB DDR, and Windows XP Media Center. I was able to install it last week without any problems, but after having it run for less then 24 hours it suddenly crashed, resetting on its own. It then would not boot back up. It wouldn't get past the XP startup screen. Once or twice it would make it to the login screen but would give an error that some login file was corrupt. I tried recovering Windows, but it gave me an error at 60% of the Windows install, saying "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer."
There was some technical information as well. I took a picture of it with my digital camera and can e-mail the image to anyone who wishes to see it. I don?t see anyway to post a picture in this forum.

I then tried to do a new install and basically the same error message came up at 60% installation. The description was slightly different but still saying the same thing.
I then rebooted my computer, and my video card crapped out, which really pissed me off because it was a Radon9800 pro. I thought maybe the problem was that my video card was overheating, so I put in an older video card I had and the same error occurred on install. Then I tried installing my old Windows2000, but with Windows 2000 the same error came up. I then thought maybe the hard drive became corrupt, so I bought the Raptor, which is when I had the problem with the installing on the Raptor. I am now able to install on the Raptor, but I am still getting the same error at 60% install.
Has anyone ever had this error on install?
A list of hardware connected to the computer is as follows:

A64 3000+
Asus A8V
1 GB corsair XMS (2 512MB) DDR400
(Radon 9800 pro "not working anymore") now (Rage128 pro)
ATI HDTV wonder
ATI TV wonder Elite
Audigy 2 ZS Platinum

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS. mechBgon
Thanks for the fast help with the problem of installing on the Raptor.

And what power supply brand & model is running the show there? Also, what PCI slots are your cards in? Have you tried installing with the unnecessary cards removed?

I just tried with only the video card, RAM, hard drive, and the power supply is a 350 watt. Still had basically the same error. It must be the RAM, processor, or the motherboard that is bad???

I haven't heard of that brand 🙁 If it was inexpensive, then it might be an overrated one like a lot of freebie "comes-with-the-case" ones are nowdays.

Aside from that, since your RAM is fancy stuff, crank up your memory voltage to 2.7 volts in the motherboard's BIOS, look in Advanced > Jumperfree Configuration and it should be there. Your memory's spec'd for up to 2.8 volts by Corsair, so 2.7 is ok and you can try 2.8 if you really have to.

edit: let me also ask a dumb question, are this cable and this cable both hooked up?

ya i have thoes cables hooked up. Well my videocard that is in it now dosent use external power. but when i had the 9800 hooked up it was powered up.
i just turned the power up on the ram to 2.7 but it still wont install. it crashed at the same time as always approx 60% with the file called NTFS.sys
The powersupply was the one that came with the case when I bought it. It says it is certified for AMD and intel use.
What do you think my options are now? trying to get replacement parts for the motherboard, processor, and or ram?
I can send you a picture of the message i am getting if you think it might help?

If it were me, I'd

1) start by looking carefully at the CD to make sure it's still clean and undamaged

2) try with a different optical drive

3) get a quality aftermarket power supply. The AMD/Intel certification really doesn't mean much as regards the quality of it. If you live in the US, here's a nominee: Fortron 450W ATX2.0 PSU with single 120mm fan. Fortron has a good reputation. Some other brands that have good reputations are Enermax, Seasonic and Antec.

Its a brand new CD with no scratches or blemishes on it what so ever.
I actually have tried 2 CD drives. First one I tried was the one that will be in it once (if) I can ever get it up and running. The LG GSA-4081B (CDRW-DVDRW). then I put in a DVD-CD player. Douring the install process I do get error messages on other files saying it was unable to copy the specified file. But pressing enter normally corrects the problem when it tries to copy it for a second time. It makes me think it is a dirty CD but then when i try and install my old Windows2000 it gives me the other error. I guess I will have to try a better powersupply and see if that works. At this point im begining to have douts though. But id hate to have to go out and buy new MB or Processor.

btw. thanks for all your help.

Sure thing, I just hope I'm leading in the right direction here 😕 If you have an electrical multimeter, you might try testing the power supply's voltages as a curiosity item. The power supply's yellow wires are 12.0V, orange are 3.3V, and red are 5.0V. If some of them are way off target, like more than 10% off, or jump around, that would tend to support the idea of the power supply being a culprit.

If not, at least you will have a nice future-ready power supply 🙂

mechbgon is exactly right on the power supply issue. 350Watt high-quality power supply is the minimum for an Athlon64 system.

General rule of thumb is that any power supply that comes with the case is generic and/or garbage. (unless it's an Antec case or a few others)

Go buy yourself an Antec, Fortron, Enermax, Thermaltake, high-end Aspire, Sparkle power supply and get a minimum of 400Watts.

🙂

5.4 and 11.98 are the red and yellow wires. purple are the 3.3V on this PS for some reasion. Wasnt able to measure it because of where it is connected to the motherboard.

I think im going to take it into a computer store :disgust: and tell them im having problems with installing the operation system and let them deal with it. Long as they dont charge me an arm and a leg.
It sucks though cause I wont be able to do that for another 2 weeks as im going to be away with work.
