The Big Ram Question

I just bought 2gb of DDR400 CAS2 Ram that run extraordinarily well in my rig.

Since I replaced it with 2x512 CAS3 Ram I was curious if I could just stick in all the ram and run it. So I did.

Computer booted just fine but memory is running at 333MHz with a latency of 2-4-4-7 (don't know what that translates to).

I was hoping that even running at lower CAS and slower MHz, 3gb would be better than 2gb of CAS2 @ 400Mhz.

What do you guys think?

2 or 3gb Ram??? :p

Depends. Slightly lower latency isn't going to matter if you're swapping to the hard drive because you're out of RAM. Personally, I'd go with the 3gb - it may be overkill now, but it won't be in the future.

I mostly game with photoshop coming in a distant second.

Will a 3gb setup impact gaming more or less seeing it is running as slower speeds?

You might be able to manually change the speed in the BIOS to 400MHz. I'd try that, first. However, if I were you I'd sell of the 2x512MB regardless of what speed you can get out of it. 2GB is plenty, and you can get $80 or more for the extra DIMMs. I don't think a 50% memory size increase is worth $80.

Stupid statement. Lots of people have a use for 2+ GB of ram. A better reply would be to ask if he actually would utilize that much ram.

depends. windows and most apps don't really know how to utilize more then 3GB of RAM. Windows XP can only see 3.17GB IIRC. check task manager and see how much you use. if you use over 2GB, put in the extra gig.

BTW, have you tried OC'ing the RAM? you may be able to run the slower RAM at 400Mhz if it's good enough.
