The better HD disc format? **POLL**

Where's the option for "i've never seen it for myself and can't make an informed decision based on specs and other people's opinions alone" option?

If I had to choose, I would go with blu-ray since hd-dvd can't do 1080p and blu-ray can (from what I understand)

And I think that will be main reason for blu-ray winning this upcoming "format war"

Where in the world did you get that mis-information? HD-DVD will indeed play 1080p.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HD_DVD

the first gen HD-DVD players apparently dont do 1080p...only 720p/1080i.

so basically 1080p on bluray is awesome.. but price at this point is double the hddvd..

i would say hddvd will win.. but in the end the guy who decideds to put both of them on one drive will win the most!

Oh, I guess they both will do 1080p

Why did they have to do 2 different formats then? One side is gonna lose alot of money.

That's a player and not the technology itself.

The very first player was released on March 31st in Japan. I'm not sure how you can say all first gen players "apparently don't do 1080p". It's the very first player out on the market. Time will tell, but the first player doesn't really hold any meaning other than being the first to market. 1080p disc are just not out yet and the TV market isn't there either.

Way too soon to tell.

The initial few dual-layer 30GB HD-DVDs encoded using VC-1 are apparently better than many of the first single-layer 25 GB Blu-ray discs encoded using less efficient MPEG-2.

Sony apparently messed up on the blu-ray Fifth Element disc (see AVSForum.com) but hard to say if that's from being cheap and using a low-quality existing master or from using MPEG2 instead of VC-1 to save effort, or what.

I'd bet on blu-ray just because Sony will ship millions of players (the PS3), and not many people will be buying standalone players of either type. Millions of PS3s + 10,000 standalone blu-ray vs. 0 + 10,000 standalone HD-DVD

HD-DVD is only cheaper because Toshiba is selling the player at a loss (manufacturing cost + retail cost is around $799 according to financial groups). Samsung didn't want to sell it's player at a loss, as that is what Sony is supposed to do since it's Sony's format.

i say Blu-Ray is a superior format based on specs, AND I predict it will win since it has movie studio support (unlike HD-DVD which is severely lacking in support).

My position on Blu-Ray/HD-DVD has always been that HD-DVD will win the war.

1. It's first to market... By months. (And BRD has been delayed again)

2. Joe Sixpack will not be able to tell the difference on his uncalibrated 50" TV.

3. No box store on earth (where 99% of these players will be sold) is capable of creating a display that accurately shows the differences (if any) in picture quality between the formats.

4. *most important* HD-DVD players cost half as much and will remain considerably less expensive for the near future.

The only real thing BD has going for it is the Sony name and the studios that have committed to the BR format and not to HD. However... if the proportion of HD:BRD players reaches some critical mass, the HD hold-out studios will have no choice but to accept the format and start releasing HD titles. (Remember DIVX? Disney, FOX...) Once that happens, and all studios are supporting HD, BD will slowly fade away.

There is also the factor of mainstream adoption. Will it take long enough for the general public to widely accept a new (any new) DVD format for the BRD players to catch up in price? If the concept of 1080i/p on a DVD takes a while to catch on then BRD players might have a shot as over the next 18 months or so the prices of the player will probably equalize.

The way things are set right now though, it doesn't look good for BRD.

But that's just my opinion.

Let's see...

compatibility with existing players ? check
cost? check
computer industry support? check
lack of an insane copy protection system? check.

HD-DVD is the winner... Sony should just detonate a nuke at their headquarters and leave us alone.

You never know. A lot of people voting think Blu-Ray is better simply because of 50GB capacity vs. 30 GB (dual layer for both).

BetaMax was technologically superior to VHS in all ways, and guess who won? Hah. Just like CDMA is technologically superior to GSM in all ways, yet the world is on GSM....

I hate Sony and I think they are evil for all this proprietary BS. Blu-Ray should die and so should PS3.

Blu-ray will have outsold HD-DVD by 100 to one the day that people pick up their PS3 preorders.

Whoozyerdaddy - your arguments all favor blu-ray unless Sony decides to cancel the PS3.

DLeRium - both formats are equally packed with "proprietary BS", that's what the war is over, which group of evil scum will get all the patent royalties.

IIRC I read that few manufacturers are coming out with dual format players. If so, then arguing on which one will win is a moot point.

Seriously, why do you idiots post who obviously know NOTHING about either technology.

HD-DVD is cheaper because it uses a similar manufacturing process as current DVD. Blu Ray uses a whole new process that requires new burning machines. Not only that, Blu Ray has a much higher fail rate currently.

Also, It's already been said that Sony is taking a huge loss on the PS3, mainly because of Blu Ray. Panasonic just delayed the release of their Blu Ray player because of manufacturing problems with the new technology.

Blu Ray keeps hitting delays and it's not going to help it in the long run. It's hard to say who will win out in the end.
