the best "whois" source

I was wondering which website do you guys goto for whois service?
some of the posts that I have seen here that succesfully discovered scams had some very detailed information (registrant address etc)

so which site did you guys get it form?

also have used a program that supposely connects to a server gather the info of the site I entered, and create txt file from the accquired info

does anyone know the name of the program?

network solutions has a whois, besides them there are plenty of sources

Uhh...it's installed as part of the OS as far as I know. The program name is 'whois'. It's probably in /usr/bin (on linux anyway).
