The best setup for a quiet PC that still has some teeth.

I am selling my amd64 3200+ and geforce 6800GT system and looking to upgrade.

I want to get something in the 3200's range (was looking at X2 3800+) but I need recommendations on something that will run cool (amd cool and quiet is the reason im looking at amd and the fact that intels run very hot).

I know my geforce generated quite a bit of heat so hopefully downgrading that (6600GT is the plan right now) would help.

I have (and want to keep from my existing computer)
Case - Kingwin alum case
DVDrw - Pioneer 106
DVDrom - Toshiba
KB/Mouse - Logitech MX1000

So basically I will need a:

Power Supply
Video Card
CPU (with the necessary cooling)
Mobo
Hard Drive (was leaning towards a sataII WD drive)

so whats your recommendation on the best quiet and cool parts? I still want to have a relatively powerful machine that is cool and quiet.

satall wd is the way to go for hd. for a psu i wold look at anted truepower, ocz modstream, fortron 450 $49 @ newegg, or anything of the like.

I'm running my system with a OCZ 520W modstream right now. I haven't had any problems at all with it (I've had it since December.) Very quiet too 🙂

Edit: How much money are you looking to spend?

if you really want a powerful AND quiet PC, then get into water cooling. otherwise, check out some of these parts...

Seasonic S12 series of power supplies are really stable and quiet. You may also look into Antec Phantom series of psu.

Gigabyte GV-NX66256DP video card. A fanless 6600 overclocked video card. I just bought one and am still playing with it. Had some problems with the nVidia drivers recognizing it, but that maybe due to my momboard too. Running ok now.

Any of the AMD cool and quiet CPUs with a quiet cooler should do. I'm sure you'll get a lot of suggestions, but I'm having a good experience with GIGABYTE G-Power GH-PDU21-SC 2 Ball Blue LED Light Cooling Fan/Heatsink that I just bought. It had a good review on Maximum PC so I gave it a shot.

Look for a momboard that doesn't have a chipset fan. The Abit AN8 Ultra9 is one, but I've been reading some reviews and they don't look too good. Too bad about that. I just came across the Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra9 momboard that looks promising. Doesn't have a chipset fan so should be quiet. Just make sure you case has proper circulation.

For HDs, my religion goes towards Seagate or Maxtor. I've had bad experiences with WD and Hitachi.

A great resouce for quiet computing is SilentPC Review (www.silentpcreview.com).

I would look into the Antect P180 cases if you're serious about quiet. I have two and am quiet happy with the quiet features of them. The only downside to them is the weight.

Whichever video card you decide upon, do lengthy research and make sure it is compatible with an Arctic Cooling Silencer. AC makes both ATI & Nvidia silencers for most new cards, just some cards take the upgrade better than others.

The benefit of AC Silencers is they are ultra quiet and blow the hot air out the back of the case, unlike 99% other vga fans & heatsinks that leave the hot air in the case. Hot air in your case means other components get hot and case/PSU fans will have to run to get out this heat.

I run my gaming rig as an HTPC. The ATI Silencer lets me overclock my video card when gaming, and when I'm watching tv shows or dvd's on it, it's super quiet.
