Apple also introduced Quartz Extreme, which takes the compositing engine in Quartz, and accelerates it in graphics cards, and combines 2D, 3D and video in one hardware pipeline via OpenGL. 'Everything on the screen is being drawn in hardware by OpenGL.' It requires AGP 2x and 32MB of video RAM. It is not possible on older graphics cards like RAGE 128 cards, said Jobs -- that means it'll work on newer iMacs and eMacs, but not on older machines, he emphasized. Jobs said this puts Apple two years ahead of 'the other guys.'" >>

Unfortunately I cant tell whether this means my ATi Rage Mobility 128 video chip on my iBook will work or not, but from the looks of it... No :/

I was planning on upgrading anyways...

EDIT: My iBook wont benefit at all. Time for a powerbook.

It was worth the money for me. But from the looks of things to come, unless they bump up the iBook in a major way, it wont be enough :/

n0cmonkey,

There are a lot of recentish systems, including TiBooks that don't meet those requirements. Such machines won't benefit from Quartz Extreme, but will be otherwise be fit for OS X 10.2 duty.

I don't understand why a desktop GUI reallly needs that much texture memory though. Even AGP 1x vs 2x isn't as significant an issue as the performance of the graphics chipset itself. ATI Rage128 by today's standards is weak.

on the right, "Jobs dips into Inkwell for OSX" watch the video.

THAT is impressive. i watched it with my boss at work. we were both very impressed.

they changed the links around. just search "apple" and find the video titled "Jobs dips into Inkwell for OSX"

<< hey n0c, when you get your new apple machine, email me your ibook, i will put it to good use 😀 >>

Im sure I can find a good use for it 🙂

OT: Wasn't there are rumor that Apple is attempting to port over OSX to AMD Hammer line? If I sound like a foo, don't reply. 😛

PS, I did use the search function - I'm a foo! 😛😉

I must admit that I'm still sort of wary of things that use 3D APIs to draw 2D applications. Considering that XP does a lot of its UI through DirectX (afaik), and when you disable that (by disabling the "Use visual styles..." option in system properties > advanced > performance it gives quite a nice speed increase. Nevertheless, if you throw enough power at it I'm sure it will be quite usable, and I must admit that Mac OS X prettier than any other OS I've seen.

/me wants one of those dual-processor mac systems now 😛
