These few keep coming up as highly recommended. I do not want an aluminum jack.

Arcan XL35 about $130ish 3.5" min to 21 3/8 max 109lbs

AC Hydraulic DK13HLQ $550 3.1" min goes up to 29" of lift. It has about 16" of reach at 3.5" and then tapers to 5.75" a light 85lbs

The Omega 29023 2.5" min height but only goes to 20", but has a little more clearance than the DK13HLQ. $300 It has 16" of reach at 3" tall tapering to 3.75" at 25" 120lbs

The later two jacks are much better for lowered cars and highly recommended for late model corvettes

You want it, you got it.....
Thread derailed and now locked.

The danger with aluminum jacks is if the load goes off kilter the jack can easily collapse. They were originally for pit crew type work where speed was paramount and portability.

Most garages have all steel jacks for a reason.

This thread is not the debate of aluminum vs steel, just that i am looking for only steel jacks capable of long reaches under car.

That's why you use jackstands... :awe:

Any jack could collapse or buckle. I will only use a jack for as long as necessary to get jack stands in, so jack construction is virtually irrelevant.

Thanks for the links, I should invest in a quality low profile full size floor jack over my crappy portable "gift set" jack, but I prefer to handle serious work on a drive on lift in a full shop anyway so its not been a priority.

This. I only used jacks to lift it. Jack stands bear the weight. Although, out of OCD's sake, the jack is still underneath the car ready to go.

The best jack is the one you have with you when you're at the side of the road after your tire bursts.

I understand that you're only looking for a steel jack, but the argument that an aluminum jack will collapse is silly.

I'd frequent some real car forums and not the type where getting a new blow off valve that you can hear from 10 blocks away makes a sticky.

Seriously though, the chances are still low, but an aluminum jack is not that strong in shearing loads / those that go off center. I was trying to find the video of the guy whose jack collapased and destroyed his rocker panel. He never had a chance to get a stand under it.

Like I said, I didn't want to get in to the argument of aluminum vs steel, just that I do not want one.

If you want to derail this thread so you can say I am trolling in some way, I guess the chuckle hut will do that and report every post.

This is your ONE warning.... My patience is wearing VERY thin lately....
KNOCK off the trolling and subtle hints, lame posts and other bullcrap or it will end.

Interestingly enough, here's a clip from a sticky from the car forum I frequent most:
Should I get an aftermarket Blow Off Valve - BOV? (Turbo Only)

Do you want to continue with the subtle personal attacks, or shall we remain on topic?

I would think that the chances of hydraulic failure in any jack far outweigh the chances of structural failure with an aluminum jack, but I'm no engineer. If your jack goes off center, that's user error. Use a proper lift point and it won't be a concern.

You're the only one in this thread who has mentioned trolling..and WTF is a chuckle hut?

Regardless, I have a Craftsman 3 ton that I've had for years and it has worked great for me. If your jack will only be used on concrete / stored in a garage, don't worry about the weight. The main reason I bought an aluminum jack was for ease of moving it around - sucks hauling a heavy steel jack to an autocross, friend's place, etc.

I have the one from Costco, it works well and is inexpensive - around $100. I believe you'll need the pucks as well (haven't I already told you this? Where's your other 'jack' thread where you posted about the lifts? Or was that in the third 'jack' thread we have, which is still on the main page?)

Alky no one was being crappy at you. If you post a thread you're going to get a bunch of replies, it makes you look really childish when you're disrespectful to anyone who recommends something other than what you've specifically put in your OP. This forum does not revolve around you, my friend.

I have the Arcan. Have been very pleased with it, reaches well under my car and didn't cost a fortune. My car is about 5" off the ground along the sides. Regular jacks don't fit under, or at least not far enough to get under the lift points.

Picked the car up high enough to get the transmission out, barely.

Taking out the f'ing #8 spark plug yesterday:

I still have an old Sears hydraulic floor jack from before 1980 ... still working perfect ... 2 ton capacity
Only issue is on some cars, not quite low enough to get under the bumper.

I have the Omega and it works well. I still have to drive up on to a 2x8 to get the jack to the jack point, but this is a minor inconvenience.

Alright, I was just curious. Calm down Mr. Topic Nazi.

I have an old steel hydraulic jack. Been carting it around for almost 20 years now. I have no idea where I bought it but it keeps working and it wasn't expensive, maybe $50. It is heavy as hell though. I'd buy another one if I thought there was any benefit to doing so... but there isn't.

Everyone post a copy of the title to your M3, just so we know you could post on a "real" car forum. I remember my first sports car.

I'm pretty sure Alchy couldn't post the his title since I'm assuming he borrowed to buy the car (based on past statements he has made). So maybe that is why he doesn't feel he can post in "real" car forums.

I've got an aluminum one, with about 4 jack stands, I'm actually pretty paranoid about getting trapped under my car when working on it, to the point that I have 2 cell phones within reach of either hand just in case.

If I could go back on the jack purchase I would have gotten the one that would lift the car the highest, the one that I have now, only seems to raise it to the point of the lowest 2 settings on the jack stands I have.

it's all about the design. steel is stronger and stiffer, which means from a design standpoint you don't need as much material to do the same job.

a properly designed (and properly used) aluminum jack should be just fine. i have had 0 issues with mine.

You are right, we all should be using cinder blocks and answering questions an OP said were irrelevant!
