The best for the poorest

My friend asks me to choose a cheap video card for him. I've never bought any entry level cards before. I need some help!

A look into Asus products I see two cards that have reasonable prices: the Radeon 9200SE 128MB and the FX5200 64MB Magic.

Which GPU is better?
Will 128MB help with such slow card?

The R9200SE 128MB also has a DVI version that is 20% more expansive than the non DVI version.
His LCD supports DVI. Will it make any different in image quality? Does it worth?

sometimes DVI makes a difference and sometimes it doesnt depending on the LCD in question, in my case it made a difference

the 9200SE is better than the 5200

Yep, that was part of BFG's new "OC" series, which currently include the 5900xt and 5500 cards. They come overclocked right out of the box, so you don't need to worry about it yourself, pretty cool huh?

yeah but they charge the same price that the card above it should cost... 149 for a 5500?? comeon now

Yes, which is why I posted the link to the $99 evga card that has a free copy of Battlefield 1942. And it has the 128 bit memory, not the 64 bit.

EDIT: Gasp! almost forgot.... 🙂

dude why not spend the extra $10 to get a 9200 NON-SE?? i mean, you're not THAT poor, are you? $10 to double performance, come on!!

i'll bet an Nforce2 IGP could beat out a 9200SE!!

better yet get a 9100.

Some of the 9200SE's actually come with 128 bit memory, which is good but the clocks on the other hand...

What is that?

The Nvidia Geforce4 Ti4200. It performs on par and sometimes better than a ATI Radeon 9600 Pro w/o FSAA(full screen anti-aliasing) but it will kick the crap out of the other two you just mentioned. Your friend will thank you for it and they can be had around 50-100.

And a free slinky! Sorry, that sux after all these posts and you have to look at the picture close up 🙁

They both suck. A lot. The 9200SE is, if you can believe it, even worse than the regular 9200 64MB.

You might as well just buy a GF4MX440 for $30 and pocket the $20 difference. Neither card is much of an improvement over it (although they'd at least offer true DX8.1 and, in the case of the FX5200, completely useless DX9 support). I honestly can't recommend either card -- if your cash is that tight, buy a GF4MX and save up for something that doesn't suck as much.

then you don't know a real geforce4, the geforce4 mx is just a glorified geforce2. get your friend a ti4200 and he will be happy. 😉

Ti4200 > 8500 > 8500LE ~ 9100 > GF3 > 9000pro > 9000 ~ 9200 > 9200SE

The only difference between the 9000 and 9200 is 8xAGP, which is an absolutely useless feature for an entry level card.
A 9200SE is a bad choice for gaming. I'd get a second-hand Ti4200 or a R9100 instead for about the same price (or less).

Nervousnovice,

I know you said cheap, but I didn't see you mention how cheap.(unless I missed something) So exactly how much is your friend willing to spend? I mean, for $150 you can get a 9600XT and that owns everything mentioned and then some. The 9600 Pro can also be found for $110ish, which is just a bit slower than the 9600XT.

Oh yea. His budget is below $50. With the help of all of you guys, I guess a good pick is Ti4200.
