Hi y'all,

I have been toying around with my NAT for a while now and I have noticed that the important questions concerning NAT have gone unanswered. So, let's start a good thread with info for all those out there who "need" it. There are at least a dozen good choices out there, so let's do what Anand people do best and benchmark our setups. I would like to find out which has the fastest transfers, the easiest setup, and the best protection for your LAN. You may also include info about Napster, ICQ, or any game that might be affected and that someone should know about. Here's my $.02:

I am currently running Sygate 4.0 on three comps 2 with win2k and 1 with 98lite
I have not installed the sygate firewall, but I pass the security check on Gibson Research-Shields Up!. Testing my DSL connection at DSL Reports I get downloads of 1256kbps on my win2k server and 1228kbps on my win2k client. After 5 trials, I averaged 102.4KBps download from Tony Hawk 2 Demo on the server and slightly less on the client. My performance hit occurs when I run the available socks5 proxy for Napster. On my client I can only average downloads of 50-60KBps while my server averages 90-110KBps. Overall, I am pleased with Sygate. It needs very little resources, sets up easy, has enough built in security, allows fast downloads on client, and allows you 30 full days to try it out. I only mention the last one because NAT32 limits you to one hour at a time. My vote so far is for Sygate, but I have another trial already in the mix for Wingate and WinRoute. So, until then, let's hear your voice.

As Always,
D

I'm using Sygate also, easy setup & so far so good.DSL Reports is a good site. Intresting my sever downloaded at 1630down/63up while my client was at 2603down/98up. According to there bandwidth test it showed my RWIN is to low.
My port scan did good with Zone Labs & Sygates Enhanced Security. I shut off ZL & tried again, still passed port scan, then removed Enhanced securtiy check box ,ran port scan & I was wide open!

I have run a Tribes server with no problems from Sygate
I have to give a thumbs up to Sygate but I think I'll try the WinProxy trial version next before I buy one.

I'll be getting cable in a couple of weeks, and OpenBSD will do all networking things - NAT, DHCP server for my home network etc..

Why not just use the ICS built into Windows98se,Windows2K,and WindowsME? It works just fine and better then any proxy software.
