I'll toss in "Jack and Diane" because it's probably the best effort from my high school years, it does a good job defining the generation.

Stairway is beaten worse than Freebird.
It doesn't make it any less poiniant, just less tolerable.
 
My suggestions would be:
"November Rain" by GNR
"Angel" by Aerosmith
"Love Song" by Tesla

"Stairway to Heaven" is good and all that jazz, but way over-played, cliche and I think people give it more credit than what it deserves.
