Hey guys, if you didn't catch my topic before this one, I bought a 70 dollar USR Performance Pro modem, and it was a piece of shit. Now i'm on the lookout for the best 56k gaming modem. It'll be used for basically cs:s, best game of them all. I did my own research and they say external modems are better for gaming, and usb is better than serial. So basically that's what i'm looking at, and I could use some newegg links. Around 70 bucks would be my limit. Oh yeah, I still havin't returned the USR modem yet, anyone have any suggestions on my lag spike out problems? Thanks.

Ah, of course I couldn't go five minutes without getting the response i'd like to a rip a person's head off. Yes, dialup for gaming, hence the new modem. Isp is...*start laugh now* ISP.com. At least it's not AOHELL, and I have the coolest e-mail address ever. These aren't your average lag spikes, these spikes make the modem completely stop responding. Here's the whole post, http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=27&threadid=1514572&enterthread=y

Dial up & gaming ?? You can spend as much as you like, but a FPS on dial up will never be good. Play all the chess you like, but get DSL or Cable to game

I seriously doubt your lag spikes are your modem's fault. That's one of the best modems you can get. The reason that external modems are recommended is that they all have hardware-based controllers as opposed to software controlled ones where the CPU does much of the work.

If you can't get broadband for whatever reason, try a new dial-up service.

i was just wondering, because many people who have dialup still use AOL. if that were so, you could get a cheap broadband connection for the same price.

I guess I have to say it since nobody is catching on, I cannot get cable/dsl. I'm thrilled with you guys' posts, but answer the question asked please? I'm sorry I get tense around this subject, i'd be a hitman just for cable, about 5 years on dial-up, just stick to the thread. And by the way, you guys have a bad interpretation of how bad dial-up actually is, I do damn fine on cs:s. *go grabs a gun....*

*Edit* since you guys are posting faster than I can respond. With my winmodem that came with this computer I don't get these crazy ass spikes, I pop in a 70 dollar modem and now hell breaks loose. Oh yeah, on a note I do not get these spikes on hl2dm, it has to be a problem with cs:s.

It's probably not your modem, is what I'm saying. Why buy a new one?

And while we're on the subject, what made you buy a new modem in the first place?

Your ISP sucks, get a new one.

Jeeze you guys post fast. When you're *forced* to use dial-up you buy the best of the best modems to get better ping. This USR modem turned out to be the worst of the worst. As for my ISP sucking? 8 bucks a month and i'm not forced to use a browser that takes up 50 megs of memory. It's pretty damn good. And who can resist an e-mail that ends in @isp.com?

Have you heard of directway or some similar 2-way satellite service? Its not as fast as cable but its still better than dial up...

You aren't going to get good performance on dialup period.

If you can't get cable, or DSL, you can get satellite broadband anywhere in the US. It will be a lot better then dialup.

It's sad i'm pressing the refresh button because there's so many anandtech members. I don't know if you've heard satellite is the worst possible option for online gaming, go look it up. I'm pretty sure my 200 ms ping is better than 1200. As for the next dialup insult from another rich cabler, i've gotten used to it, and again, (trying to be optimistic not bragging) I kick ass on cs:s...when it works...

Exactly. The ping times are high, but I'd think that the bandwidth will make up for most of it. It would still most definitely be better then any dialup solution.

Sounds like you guys have been spoiled by your broadband connections. You CAN play some games just fine on dial up... even FPS games... but I know BF1942/DesertCombat hated it when I tried to play on 56k.

To answer your question... I'd say the Courier V.Everything is probably still the best external 56k modem. I've still got mine laying around somewhere for those rare occassions that I need it. Also don't automatically assume the modem itself is the problem, there are several tweaks you can do to help out your 56k modem connection... init strings and things along those lines. I usually just simply used ATZ for my USR modems.

This looks like a pretty thorough tweak guide for 56k modems.

BTW stay away from Satellite for gaming... you're trying to lower your latency not increase it. ;)

Satellite is lousy for gaming....600 to 1000ms ping is typical :eek;

Does anyone offer wireless in your area?

there isn't such thing as "the best 56k gaming modem." Gaming and 56k modem don't go together.

Sat will NOT be better for gaming. sat connections have ~500ms an up latency times. on a dialup modem to a good host you can actually be pretty playable on a 56k with ~130ms ping times. i used to play rogue spear with my brother @ ~200ms just fine..

SAT will be better for surfing and downloading, but would be a step backwards as far as gaming goes.

i'm in dialup hell myself.. I brought a big as house in the boonies, and its taking 3 years for them to get the service they said would be here after the first six months.. imagine having both cable and dsl, and then going 3 years with dialp, 1 1/2 of those years at 31k since my security system wouldn't even pass a full 56k.

Ahh, wow. Well people i've been determined for some speed for years. Everywhere i've read everyone is anti-satellite gaming. Even if you think about it wouldn't a satellite that's 25,000 miles away create just a touch of lag? As for the juno w/ hack *cough* pm me, lol i'm very cheap. Can we get back on topic? i've googled around all night, any of you 56gay, or ex-56gayers remember any modem success? And after reading you other guys' responses, yay finally someone agrees with me. No wireless sorry : (. And i've also tweaked out the ass, I'm blaming cs:s and the modem in cahoots together. I rarely get hl2dm spikes. You broadbanders have been spoiled, you layed it out perfectly mutilater, yet people still keep telling me 56k sucks, god damn.

A microwave transciever kicks ass. I have a dual CPE setup, and a microwave tower to get the net to my buddy a good 10 miles away who can not get it any other way. Where are you located?

You know that's a lot of big words and I usually use a microwave for my pizza rolls. But incase you were serious I might as well add this to why i'm pissed about not having cable/dsl, i'm a whopping .8 miles away from the cable line. Shoot me now. Boonies of Ohio, Cleveland Rocks!

my friend. you are in luck

These are some of the best 56k modems in existance.

I persoanlly have used them and gotten on average 150 ping in a decent size CS 1.6 server.

I have averaged 100-200 ping with it.

I personally paid around 40 for mine at compgeeks last year. When I bought mine they did not even include a power adapter, so that was a 10$ extra cost for me. A quick check on their site shows they still have them, new as well.

You will be hard pressed to find a better modem at this price.

here is LINK

ok i just noticed they have the USB SupraMax for even less. 17.50.

Although I cannot attest to this modems abilities. Personally I would buy both if I were that curious.

If you have a friend within 10 miles with broadband you could set up a microwave link, and then for games it would be as fast as a lan if you were playing with them too.
