The battle of the 5-door pocket rockets...Matrix vs Vibe vs Protege 5 vs Focus ZX5 vs PT Cruiser

<< Cruiser. For looks. No doubt about it.

I used to like the PT's looks, now it just looks like a round, pudgy bastard to me😉

<< Where is the VW GTi? >>

Last time I checked, the GTI was a 3-door.

Lets just put the ford to sleep. It's ugly.

THe PT looks ok, but it's so used now like an old whore - everybody has had a go with a PT cruiser now. Vipe sucks because it's a miniazztek!

Protegy 5 is ok, but i voted matrix becaues i Kick a lottt of ass.

The Cruiser is fffffugly!

I'd have to say either the Matrix or the Protege 5. I saw a Protege 5 at the theater the other night, it was a nice looking little car.

Viper GTS

i picked the protege 5. my buddy has one of those and i think the style looks a lot better than any of the others. i don't say PT because i think it is a ripoff of the classic hot rod/roadster and i don't think you can reproduce cars from era....it's just wrong.

<< The rest of those look basically the same. They look like Civics.

true, the PT Cruiser is the only one with an ounce of originality.

<< true, the PT Ccruiser is the only one with an ounce of originality. >>

LOL!! Ripping off a design from the 30's & 40's is original?? 🙂

Yeah really! The PT Cruiser is just an old hot rod thrown into a late model stupid chassis and it looks like an econobox hotrod.

Oh, crap. Sorry 😱

I wonder why they don't sell the Golf with the 1.8T or the VR6?

It's original in that you don't see much else like it today.

Original isn't the best word. Unique is probably better.

You saw a couple of old Ford 40's coupes the other day

in todays market, yes. I'd rather have a car ripped from the 30's and 40's rather than one ripped from the late 90's.

I'd love to have a vintage car with a rumble seat and suicide doors and a flathead engine . That would be cool.

soooo cool

BTW, that car has a 351 Windsor in it.

How about this bad boy?[

I personally like the looks of the Protege. Probably not as roomy as the others, but it's a more sporty looking little machine. In black or yellow it would look great.

Either the Mazda Protege 5 or Toyota Matrix.

I'd be concerned about the Mazda's reliability and resale value though.

Too bad you didn't live closer to me, I'd be more than happy to take your current Camry off your hands 😀

Tough call, especially without having driven them all. I have seen them all in person, at least, and my pick would probably be either the Protege5 or the Matrix. The Pro5 seems to strike a nice balance between price, performance, and utility.
Between the Vibe and the Matrix, I actually prefer the Vibe's styling (assuming you AVOID non-body-color cladding :|). However, the resale of the Toyota-badged version will almost certainly be better.

they made a 1.8T golf 5 door, was a sweet car. not much interest in it i guess because it apparently didn't sell well enough to keep making it. apparently the hatchbacks sell better overseas and the sedans (jetta) sell better here, at least that's what i've been told by various ppl who sell VWs. personally i love my gti vr6.

Well, from what I understand, the new 180HP 1.8t version of the GTI is faster than the heavier (and more powerful) 6 cylinder version.

174 hp for the vr6 vs 180 for the 1.8T but i've got more torque (don't have the exact numbers). i drove both and i felt more power throughout the entire band, no turbo to spool up. the 2002 24v vr6 should have in the neighborhood of 200 hp when it finally arrives here. i kinda wish i'd waited for the new model, 200 hp vr6 and 6 speed manual. sweet ride. i do love my car tho.

<< By the way, Brandon, aren't you forgetting the Suzuki Aerio SX and the Hyundai Elantra GT?

Two of your favorite carmakers and you overlook them completely? For shame. 😛

I purposely left out pieces of sh*t 😉
