The average person has no writing skills whatsoever

After sifting through dozens of e-mails a day for support, this is the conclusion I've come to. It makes me appreciate the people of Anandtech so much more because just about every post here contains very few spelling or grammatical errors, and even those that are nitpicked upon are a whole lot better than 75% of the e-mails we get here.

Here's just one example that pretty much epitomizes a very high majority of e-mails that we get that inspired this post:

"i cant get 2 of my pages to work when other people go to my web site..im cluless here guys. i need help lol lol it just says page does not exsist thanks"

Uh, the "average" person is good for nothing. That's what makes em average. Everyone is probably good at something though.

Average people are good at average things like wiggling one's ears, having webbed feat or being able to do a really good Gollum impression.
If an average person was a really good painter, a musical genius or extremely skilled in international finance then they aren't an average person are they?

Agreed. <- was that a valid sentence? :)

My writing skills are well above average, but the better they get, the more I realize that they are just not quite up to snuff. I am going to be buying the "Gramatically Correct" book from Amazon by Stillman soon. Should be very boring reading, but then I can show off to those who have basic highschool or a couple of university courses. Ha!

hehe, you're right. "everybody is good at something" is a feel-good statement, so that the truly mediocre can have a reason to carry on. I can say honestly that I'm not great at a damn thing. I have no illusions about that. Well, actually that isn't true; I'm quite good at posting on Anandtech.

I see emails like that all the time where I work. It amazes me that people are so lazy as to not proof read their writing. I guess they just don't care if they come across as ignorant.

Our CEO goes crazy about this every now and then. I heard that he actually hired a consultant to come in and instruct a few unlucky individuals to hone their grammar skills.

You'd think that people would take enough time to write correctly in a professional environment....

Yep, but then the average person is stupid as hell. To be honest spelling mistakes and people not knowing the difference between two, too and to, your and you're, there, their and they're, etc. don't much bug me. I notice it, but generally don't point it out or anything. On the other hand the use of wut, u, ur, 2, 4, b, r, y, ne1, thx, and plz should be grounds for capital punishment :|

for 3 years during college, I helped judge a writing contest that the local high school did every year. I think all students were required to submit something, because there was some pretty bad stuff in there... almost made me consider becoming a teacher, just to help them out ;)

my writing skills are horrid. partly due to never haveing an english teacher that i didn't hate with a passion and the fact that i'm a lazy jackass.
