"The average annual salary in India is 392,291 Rupees per year!"

As an Indian, I find that kinda hard to believe. Is this for a specific industry/profession?

And we complain that we outsource jobs to India. Looks like they need the jobs more than we do.

I highly doubt that is their average salary for the country. I call shens.
They wouldn't be coming here to work at 7-11 if they were making that kind of bank over there.

CIA world factbook says their GDP per capita is $3300/year purchasing power parity. Since stuff is cheaper in India, it's even less in real US dollars.

There was an article in the news here recently. Something like, "The average Indian has to work for around 58 (or 68) minutes to afford a Big Mac."

BUt what they don't tell you is that it costs 287,000 rupees for a mcdonalds value meal. I wish someone told me that before I took the plunge and moved to India.

Sure, but 5 rupees doesn't get you much stuff.

A footlong Chicken Meatball sandwich at Subway is Rs. 130/- A tall glass of Coke to go with it is Rs. 35/-

Obviously it includes only white collar professions!

This is totally wrong information. McDonald's meal is expensive compared to other food joints in India. Being an Indian, I can tell you it is around same if you convert Rupees (Rs.) to USD.

-------------

Finally, you can not compare Indian average salary with US salaries numerically and then deduce about standard of living.

$8,000 for average worker in India? Wow, those guys make a lot of money. The average worker in China make only $1,000 a YEAR. And the white collar workers with college degree in big city like Shanghai only make $1,000 a month.

I make well below the average for my state (New York) and a bit below the national average. I guess that's the life of a data center monkey.
