purbeast gives it

my GF and i put it in last night expecting something totally different. I thought it would be a movie where each comedian takes a turn telling the joke. instead if has one comedian tell a part of the joke, then flips to another comedian to tell his version of that same part of the joke, then goes to another one to tell his version of that part, then goes back to the first guy and he continues to tell the next part of the joke in his own version, etc, etc, etc. ...

and the joke isn't even funny. it basically is just vulgar and crude and is a pure shock value joke. all they do is try to tell stuff as nasty/revolting/vulgar/dirty/gross as they can. it was just not even funny because it was like they were just trying too hard.

i didn't even watch the whole thing, i had to turn it off because it just got so ridiculous. granted some of the people tell it in a funny manner (I actually liked Gilbert Godfrey), it still is just a nasty disturbing joke.

anyone else see this movie?

i didn't even get to that ... i watched the first 20 mins or so, skipped to bob saget, and turned it off after i saw him tell a few things and it kept switching between him and someone else.

The original joke might've been funny in its time but today, it just makes most people go "Huh?" I'd agree that the movie mostly sucked and was just one comedian after another after another trying to outdo each other in terms of revulsion factor. Although Kevin Pollak doing Christopher Walken telling the joke was pretty funny. :) But overall,

I saw it and loved it... Sarah Silverman and Billy the Mime were the best things about that movie. In some ways, it's more of a documentary than a comedy. And somehow, by trivializing the disgusting acts they describe, the movie manages to come across as fairly inoffensive, IMHO.

I got a kick out of Bob Saget. Foul-mouthed motherfvcker. But overall it was a waste of time.

Trivializzing the acts they describe? how do you trivialize a father sticking his popeye arms up his daugthers ass and making her bleed while his wife gives his son head while she is crapping in a bucket? that isn't even funny at all, its just disgusting.

and yes, thats the kind of humor in this movie. err documentary, as I would agree with you on that term.

There lies the problem. This movie is not to be purchased nor rented. It is only supposed to be seen in the theater.

At first, the whole audience is stunned and speachless. Later, someone finally snickers in the back. Then someone lets themselves laugh. The audience finds that laughter so funny, that they laugh - not at the movie but at what gets others in the audience to laugh, moan, vomit, etc. That is the experience - watching the reactions of dozens around you. Without that, it is not worth seeing.

It's so ridiculously perverse and wrong that it can't be interpreted as anything but shock filler material. And by constantly assaulting you with this horrible imagery, they force you to acclimate yourself to it. A half-hour in, you've gotten used to the horror of it and can just let the disgusting stuff slide past while you enjoy the nuances of the comedian's performance. To me, that's really the whole point of the movie: the content of the joke doesn't matter, it's how it's told. Their expressions, inflection, creativity... not to sound too grandiose, but I think it can teach people a lot about the psychology of humor and the absurdity of taboos when viewed from a specific perspective.

Granted, it's definitely not for everyone. If you can't get past the revolting stuff and see it for what it is, then the film is just torture.

Everyone at the theater I saw it at was pretty much acclimated in the first 5 minutes. Although there was THAT guy that laughs at every little thing even the jokes that weren't so funny, thereby ruining parts of the movie.

The original joke was never supposed to be funny. It's just supposed to be told funny, which is entirely different. I thought it was great, especially Sarah Silverman's version.

The parts I liked, Sarah Silverman, Gilbert Gotfried, Bob Saget, The Mime, Kevin Pollack, and that old guy near the beginning with the big eyebrows

parts I really liked while other parts werent funny at all, after all the buildup i wish they could have just shown Gilberts and Sagets parts without interupption since they are supposed to be the best at telling it

I liked, but didn't love it. I thought it was funny, and offered interesting insight into the world of comedy (much the The Comedian did, a few years back). Of course the joke itself is disgusting and not that funny - the movie readily acknowledges that.

telling the joke is like trying to sumup the superbowl by describing the rules of football. It's not a very good joke.

What was great was watching it in theaters and the couple behind us who were so revolted by what was being said, while at the same time the guy next to them trying to supress laughter like his life depended on it. Finally he cracked up, they left... and all hell broke lose in the theater. it was the funniest movie i had seen in quite some time.

Though if i sat down after renting it with the girlfriend as opposed to going to a theater with a friend and laughing our asses off - i'm sure i'd have hated the movie too.

There were a lot of good moments in the movie. I enjoyed it :D

It's not really a joke, it's just a beginning, a punch line, and the comedian fills in the middle trying to make it as ridiculous and vulgar as possible.

It goes as follows (or something along these lines):

A father walks into a talent agency and says "boy do I have an act for you!". The talent agent asks what kind of act it is and the father says "it's a family act". "Sorry, I don't book family acts" replies the talent agent. "But our act is really special" says the father. "What's so special about it?"

... (fill in middle part here) ...

The agent just sits in silence for a long time. Finally, he manages, "That's a hell of an act. What do you call yourselves?"

The father replies, "The Aristocrats."
