The Apparent 16x DVD drive limit...

Does anyone know why nothing has come out that is faster for quite a long time? Is this similar to the 16x threshold for cdrom drives?

At 16x a DVD is spinning at the same rotational speed as a CD at 52x (about 10,000 RPM), so there isn't much breathing room before you start hearing about exploding DVDs becoming a problem.

Not to mention that myth busters (discovery channel show) prooved that at around 7000 rpm they could easily destroy a cd.

At 10000 rpm when a CD breaks it look like it was fairly dangerous.

Not to mention that we are also reaching maximum data transfer bandwidths and read speeds at the 10000 rpm. You system just can't read the data and use the data at that speed consistently.

The reason is safety just as stated in the previous posts. It is not safe for a dvd drive to run at a speed higher than 16x. I doubt; however, that it has anything to do with the system not being able to read the data quickly enough.

If your speed mad with opticals, have a look at the Kenwood True-X drives, although not sure if they've moved onto DVD optics.

TrueX drives have been out of production for quite some time, & AFAIK at this time no companies have Zen Research based products available.

This is too sad. Zen Research still owns the rights to that technology, but they're just sitting on it. Surely a good optical company like Lite-On, Plextor, or Yamaha (RIP) could buy it, refine it, and bring about greater optical speeds again. Imagine a multi-laser dvd burner that spins @ 4x, but delivers 28x write speeds! :Q

There's a reason why it's sitting on the shelves: it's no good. Remember, even up to the last TrueX drive, they were largely prone to failure; either Zen's tech simply isn't "good enough" or it's not physically possible to make good TrueX drives in large batches, both of which are cases where no one wants to bother with the tech.

PS 28x DVD write speeds are out of the question; there's no way on Earth most HDs can deliver that much data at once
