About the Appalachain Trail Project

Down syndrome affects people from all walks of life regardless of race, religion, or financial status. Those with Down syndrome have the ability to learn, feel, and experience like anyone else, but they need special attention and help to overcome and improve upon their disabilities.

The Appalachian Trail Project will help bring about building The Margarita Tejada Center for Down syndrome children in Guatemala, and in addition fund, and provide a means for medical treatment and examinations, as well as establish a place for educational and medical assistance where nothing existed before.

The purpose and goal of the Appalachian Trail Project is to enlist the support of everyone who would contribute and to transform pennies into dollars, to bring about the miracle of making a difference for people of a third world country like Guatemala.

Giving even a little will effect a tremendous improvement in the lives of children facing great handicaps, but who with the help of the Appalachian Trail Project will have an opportunity to live better lives.

I actually know know the webmaster and updater of the website. The Appalachian Trail is 2165 miles a pledge or 1 cent for every mile completed equals $21.65 at the end if Jonathan Rowe treks across the trail. You could donate more if you want but any help is greatly appreciated.

I've wanted to do something like that, like bike or walk from one place to another for a charity.
I'll look into that site.

Cool benefit. I did a hike for the ADA (American Diabetes Association) two years ago; hiked the AT's cousin, the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) from Mexico to Canada. That was fun. :D

I think it'd be so awesome to just start a tradition where when anyone buys a certain type of drink.. say a Margarita ;).., a portion of the cost of that drink automatically goes to some charity.

I mean.. drinks in bars are almost 90% profit.. So let a dollar go to a charity. Then, people could be drinking with the excuse that they're donating to charity. It'd be really cool if it went accross all bars and businesses and became a tradition.

yay.. /me overflows with ideas

That would be hard how can you keep track whether or not the "tips" are for the bartender/server or for charity?

It would be the bar's duty.. but part of advertising for the drink since the people ordering it will know that part of it goes to a good cause'..

I'm saying that if a bar charges $5.25 for a drink anyway, they might as well give up a buck to charity. Think.. there's gotta be 20 million margaritas served every year (more, less?).. That's a lot of money for charity and it takes from something that wouldn't be felt much.. I mean.. it's one drink. The tip would be handled the same way.. just the bar gives up a buck, because 'it's tradition'.
