I didn't realize this but Thief is also integrated with the latest version of PhysX. Proprietary battleground!

As far as Mantle, I can't conclude anything from the recommended specs released by Edios. (GTX 660, R9)
Thief does not need Mantle.People are forgetting that it use UE3(2007) graphic engine.

AMD is just trying to match Nvidia optimization with Mantle and yes Mantle will provide additional performance improvements nothing more.

28th, BF4 Patch minus Mantle patch.

29th. AMD Catalyst Software Suite 14.1 with Mantle and True Audio.

31st, BF4 Patch.

If you go to your BF4 launch options the top option is left justified like in the picture

It still looks like an edited pic to me though, the "AMD Mantle" part looks like a smaller font that has also been bolded.

Its fake. Johan already shot down a fake mantle video claiming there would be settings associated with it in the graphics settings in game that weren't there in the video.

So according to the man himself the setting is in game. Not in origin launch options.

Obvious fake is obvious

Even if AMD releases the beta drivers with mantle at the end of the month on schedule, we still gotta wait for DICE to patch BF4 for Mantle, and since the game is a mess, I don't see that happening.

At this rate Thief will be the first to show Mantle off, since it has out of the box support for it supposedly.

Why did you have to spoil it ? It was obvious only two people took the time to actually look up the source. They would of kept going for at least 5 pages by my estimates. 😛

Thought gif's weren't allowed in technical forums. Only reason I didn't post that epic hilarious thing.

ROFL😱

Pretty much.
I think the +45% in BF4 comes from a scenario where you use a weak APU and a strong GPU. Mantle reduce CPU overhead and removes a lot of the bottleneck from the weak APU, which makes the FPS boost pretty good because the GPU can finally operate like it should without getting chocked.

With a strong APU/i7, I don`t think we are nearly close to +45% boost.

I agree with this. There's a reason they used an APU instead of an 8 core FX processor for the claim.

Now, it's early days with Mantle. We don't know if BF4 fully utilizes all of Mantles potential, or not. It is possible (likely?) that there are other overhead reducing features of the API that won't be implemented in the first game that uses it. Especially one that it's being added as a patch.

I had a thought when I first heard Mantle and PhysX were going to both be supported. Is it possible that with Mantle's reduced CPU overhead that PhysX could run on high through the CPU without bottle necking and dramatic loss in performance?

There are no GPU accelerated PhysX effect in Thief. All eyecandy physics feature implemented in Mantle or DirectCompute.

PhysX is a middleware. It has plenty things that only run on CPU, even if you have a GeForce dGPU. There is an extra module that provides GPU accelerated PhysX effects, but these are can't be synchronized to the core gameplay.

You're talking about hardware accelerated PhysX. Thief will apparently use the PhysX 3.x SDK, but that doesn't mean it's going to be hardware accelerated. It's just going to run on the CPU, but significantly faster than previous versions.

Hardware accelerated PhysX is designed to scale to higher levels than what CPUs can comfortably handle, and I don't think Mantle's reduced CPU overhead could change that. GPUs are just too far ahead in the raw power department.

I'm really surprised though that Eidos Montreal went through all the trouble of upgrading the PhysX SDK in their game from 2.8 to 3.x. I wouldn't think a game like Thief would be physics intensive, but I might be wrong.

*Edit*

After finding this interview, it appears that Thief will use lots of cloth physics, so that's probably why they upgraded the PhysX SDK.

I imagine the release day/BF4 benchmarks reviews of Mantle will be one of the hottest tech topics around the Net in a long, long time.
I'm hoping for some True Audio effects, much better frame rates and some noticable IQ improvements.
It's time to see what "close to the metal" programming really means.

A tad off topic, but I'm blown back by the jump in price on some of the new AMD cards, I bought my R9 280X back in Oct. for $330, the very same card jumped to $430 in Dec then it's now $480- the competing GTX770 is now significantly cheaper ($370 for 4GB version). Jeez, and the 290/290X's price are also outrageous.

PS-
100% edited, where it says "AMD Mantle" it's supposed to say "Present all options". And YES the font does look a little off.
