The AMD at the Glen

So we all know AMD has never been very good at marketing. But they finally are at least trying to get thier name out there. I just think they could have done a little better then sponsering a Nascar race. I mean don't get me wrong, I am an AMD fan and a Nascar fan, but I can't imagine that Nascar fans make up a very large chunk of the consumer PC market. But at least its something.

Not all NASCAR fans are rednecks, as many people on this forum believe for some reason. In fact, there are probably just as many white collar fans as blue collars... and these white collar fans would have needs to buy computers. Heck, Nextel sponsors the series so there's a large technology company right there catering to the NASCAR crowd.

Maybe this has something to do with that NASCAR-styled computer (sold at CompUSA, IIRC?). It certainly isn't a bad idea if it was linked.

Unlike the day when the King (Richard Petty) ruled the track NASCAR, like FI, Indy and Champ Car, now is very High Tech. It makes sense that some of the leaders in the field of technology get their names associated with it. Besides NASCAR is blowing up and becoming extremely popular with all the demographics in America. This particular race is on a road course (Watkins Glen in New York) so even those who complain that all NASCAR is is going fast and turning left on banked tracks should be entertained.

As an aside, if anybody wants to see how well their home theater works tune into the HD station running a NASCAR race.

They have billboards on the side of 680 in San Jose. I don't know how many people really drive by those billboards and think "Oh, my servers would run cooloer if they had AMD processors!", though.

Just cause rednecks aren't computer nerds doesn't mean they still don't own them. When they go to a store to buy a new PC they'll recognize AMD. That's a plus.

I am not saying all nascar fans are rednecks, I myself watch nascar and am not a redneck. I just think there wher eother areas they could have better marketed to. Now if during the race they actually run commercials, then that would be great. But if all the fans at the track and people wtaching on TV see is AMD at the glen, even with a catchy slogan or the announcer letting everybody know that AMD is a CPU maker. I just think everyone would still be more inclined to buy intel, since intel actually has commercials.

I mean just do something more then sponser a race. DO the commercials, pick 50 fans(although I wonder how many people actually attend road course racing, I am sure quite a few, just have no idea how many)at random and give away some nice AMD powered CPU's. Give every fan that attends a free AMD tshirt. Just more then sponser the race, cause thats not gonna get through to the rednecks or even the white collared people that attend. AMD just doesn't yet have the brand name recognition with the non tech general public.
