The AMD 2200 has had it - it's time to build again. I'm sad and depressed.

Yes, the current rig I have - an AMD 2200XP in an Asus A7N8X-Deluxe motherboard has about had it. I'm now running Slimserver on it to serve up my audio to my awesome Squeezebox, and alas, multitasking is starting to go down the tubes. Time to build again.

I play the occasional game - my favorite is Falcon Allied Force. I don't need any screaming frame rates - it actually runs fine on my 2200 now. Sure, maybe I'll try some others out, but alas, I just get sick of them anyway.

I run Photoshop. I do RAW image editing. I rip my CDs using EAC/LAME. I do some LIMITED video editing - dumping the MiniDV (IEEE1394) stuff to DVD. Some video encoding/compression/transcoding. Oh yeah - I do some playing around with audio stuff, like Reason and Ableton Live. A good audio card (M-Audio) is in play.

I think I want Vista. It's purty. I guess I want the "three-year" PC build. Of course budget is a big deal. The Core 2 Duo setups are fast and sweet, but yikes, the $$$. There's no overclocking in my future. I'm not overly demanding of my stuff. I just want the best bang-for-the-buck that I can get...as long as I get enough bang for what I do. We use a little cheap notebook to do a lot of our surfing, and I see a notebook is on our horizon...I just can't spend the money on a desktop replacement.

Sure, I've looked at all of the postings regarding motherboards, processors, etc., so much so that it becomes overwhelming.

I remember building my first machine...an IBM XT w/10mb hard drive, 5 1/4" floppy, and CGA graphics. Sweet. It was so simple back then.

So, give me your thoughts, if you'd be so kind.

Thanks,
Kris

and amd 4200x2 setup will be pretty cheap, prolly $180 for both cpu and mb. you can also find a good deal on 1GB ddr2 667 in the hotdeals forum.. you can get up to 5GB at about $25 per gig after rebate.. so you could pick up 2GB of ram for about $60 after rebate.. right there total build cost, less than $300 up front, about $250 after rebates..

If you want vista, check your drivers. M-Audio has only provided Vista 32 drivers for the Revolution cards and external USB devices, such as the Audiophile USB. Audiophile 2496 PCI owners and Delta owners are still lacking drivers.
