The airline lost my luggage... EDIT: $2500 minimum compensation for lost luggage?

Flew home after being away on travel for work, SBA to HSV. I arrived fine, but my luggage never made it. That was last Thursday, so today marks 4 days. Has anyone had experience with this? What are my chances of getting it back? The bag contained most of my business casual attire. It would be a big waste of money if I buy new stuff and they later find it. I saw on the airline's website their liability is limited to $2800, which is fine, since I had less than $1000 worth of stuff in there, but do they pay you that full amount if they don't recover it, or do they only pay for what you claim was in the bag, and how long will this all take?

Cliffs:
Lost luggage 4 days ago
What's the chance it'll be found?
When/how much will they pay me if not found?

Edit: DOT link says there's a minimum of $2500 compensation for lost luggage, and I believe it has since increased to $2800... I hope it's gone forever!

If this ever happened to me, they'd be in deep trouble for that 2780$ gold brick that is the only thing I ever carry around in my 20$ duffel bag

Lost luggage always happens to me but its always when I reach my destination which sucks worse than losing it when you get home. Ive always gotten it in 1 or 2 days though, 4 sounds sorta bad.

When I went traveling around last christmas, I had my bags lost several times. Other members of my family had similar experiences.

They will probablly find it, and if not they should cut you a check for the amount lost.

My husband just got back from a trip 2 weeks ago and they lost his luggage.. took them a few days but they had a courier deliver the luggage directly to our house first thing the next morning once they found it.. on a sunday.

I've gotten mine back. I went to Charleston, SC and my bag went to Bermuda. WHY COULDN'T THEY HAVE SENT ME TO THE WRONG PLACE???

Don't forget to claim the cost of new luggage as well as the contents if you don't end up getting it back. Upgrade 🙂

They usually find it, IF you put your name/address on the bag tag.

No, I'm an idiot, my name/address was not on it. I've moved 8 times in the last 5 years, so i never bothered. But I now see the error of my ways.

British Airways lost my luggage, as I was on the way to a 12 day Baltic Sea cruise. I didn't get it back for about 2 months. When I finally got it back (trashed), it was via another airline, which told me I had to go pick it up from the airport that day, or it would be sent back to British Airlines somewhere.

Their claims department has no telephone access. It's only possible to reach them through snail mail, email (which they do not reply to), or fax. It's been months now, still waiting for a reply.

I hope you don't go through the same thing.

Ya, me too. I flew American Airlines, domestic only, so it should be slightly easier than that. They have an automated system that tells you if your baggage has been found. And on Sat (two days after the baggage was lost) someone from AA called me for a description of what was in the bag. He said they would notify other airports to be on the lookout. They've been fine so far.

My baggage wasnt lost but my bag didnt make it on the plane I was traveling in. So the airline (korean air) put the bag in the next scheduled flight to my destination and a courier traveled 45 miles to my house from LAX the next morning and dropped it off. It was kindve my fault too but lets not get into more details 😛

Anyways my point is, airlines usually have a really good system for lost luggage and usually it ends up being found.

Airlines have lost my luggage countlesss times, but then I used to travel heavily.

Anyway, its rare for them to completely lose luggage. I remember once it took 6 days to get my stuff back🙁 They have always delivered it right to my door also🙂

about 10 years ago the airline lost my luggage while on vacation. They told me to buy what I needed until they found it. It arrived to my hotel the next day. I sent them receipts and they sent me a check for the clothes I bought (<$50). It's probably up to the airline but the customer service isn't what it used to be 10 years ago.

We travelled on buddy passed with Frontier Airlines and they lost our luggage and then explained that they don't offer compensation to people flying on buddy passes.

We were flying with my folks and they made all the arrangements, so don't tell me I should have redy the fine print on the back of the ticket while chasing a 2 year old around the airport.

Still contemplating suing actually as I don't think it shoud be legal to assume custody of somebody's items with no repercussions should you steal/lose/damage said items.

also, if you booked your flight with mc or visa gold +, i *believe* they have additional compensation for lost/delayed luggage...something like 2 sets of clothing i think.... read it before..maybe its amex?

I used my corporate Mastercard. They have $1500 lost luggage protection I believe. I have to leave on another ~2 week business trip on Monday and have no clothes for it. I'm wondering if I can get either the airline or the credit card to help me with this purchase. The only thing I'm concerned about is spending money on new clothes and then having the airline find my baggage and receiving no compensation for what I bought.

That would suck if your luggage was more costly than $2,800. I know idiots that travel with luggage more costly than some Korean cars.

even if they could find it, you would have been w/o your clothing during the period that it was lost. just get documented proof that they lost it for a period of time..that should secure your compensation from the CC
