1) finally got my first second HD and i am wondering if since it is for storage can you take it off later and put in an external enclosure for external storage w/o loosing the data it obtained as internal with no problem?

2) also this is a maxtor 250GB HD BTW and i am currently having problems formatting it to 250GB, it persists on allowing only 137GB with the maxblast cd? confused as i have winxp pro SP1...what could be the problem? i enabled 32-bit transfers for it just like the boot drive (WD 80 GB) could that be a problem?

thanks in advance!

Question 1: Yes

Question 2:

Requirements for support of 48-bit LBA (Exceeding 137Gb HDD size limit):

OPERATING SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 or better or Windows XP with Service Pack 1 or better

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:

Your hard drive controller must support 48bit LBA (Large Block Addressing) - check the motherboard manufacturer's website for BIOS update and/or motherboard chipset driver update that MAY add this ability.

Alternately, you can install an add-on 48bit LBA capable controller card.

MOTHERBOARD DRIVER AND BIOS UPDATE:

You may need install the latest motherboard BIOS update.

You may need to install the latest motherboard driver. Intel boards in particular may require the latest "Intel Application Accelerator" driver.

The last item (Intel Application Accelerator update) is the most common reason you'll have a problem with large drives on Dell computers more than 2 years old.

Hope this helps...

Sorry for the highjack, but what does 32 bit transfer do? the option is disabled in my bios, and I've been reluctant to turn it on fearing data corruption.

i dunno about 32 bit either but i enabled it ever since i made this comp (not a dell) and the HD has been running excellent

Thanks, I'll enable it, then bench my system to see if there's improvement.

Sorry I can't help with your problem.
