And while the Deadpool star has become a widely recognized actor, he’s also become closely associated with his two brands—Aviation Gin and Mint Mobile.
He bought stakes in the companies in 2018 and 2019, respectively, and has become their brand ambassador, delivering jokes and his signature quirkiness in commercials.

He sold his stake in Aviation Gin in 2020 for $610 million.
He sold his stake in Mint Mobile in 2023 for ~$300M.

No idea what his acquisition costs were tho.

Also, a startup gin company worth at least $600M!?!

First Sprint, now Mint Mobile acquired by T-Mobile which is owned by Deutsche Telekom (majority shareholder). Mint Mobile uses T-Mobile 5G cell towers and bulk-buys excess network capacity and sells it to it's own customers. Same thing with Google-Fi which uses the T-Mobile network. :p

sprint seemed like a bad fit for tmbolile.

their networks weren't compatible.
they bought it then killed it.
what was the point in spending all those $Billions$?

More megamerger disasters in the past.

On the other hand, Ryan Reynolds did great, he's now worth about +$350M.

Mint is a MUCH better deal than Fi with near-identical service speed/coverage. (plus customer service WITH a brain!)

For $15 a month you get unlimited texts/calls and 5GB's of 5g data. (starting in May... currently it's 4GB's for $15)

Also they frequently offer a deal where you pre-pay for 3 months ($45) and in return GET 6 (six) months coverage included... so $7.50 a month!

Full-price cell service these days is for "the 1%" and the very dumb only. (sorry)

Liquors like vodka and gin are one of those things that as long as you put it in a fancy bottle it will sell well regardless of quality.

Them not being compatible would've actually been a reason to buy (giving them broader coverage), plus 5G is making compatibility fairly meaningless (as most phones now are pretty broadly compatible across 5G networks), and it was about buying spectrum for the future more than anything.

Sprint was going to kill their 3G anyway on its own, and their LTE network was shit. I think a decent chunk of them probably would've worked on T-Mobile's LTE network, even if not optimally.

Tello is just as good and you aren't locked into the 3/6/12 month period if you need to change things up. Plus, data only plans have no taxes or fees. Mint tacks on about $5/3mo. Plus tello lets you use all data for hotspot even on the unlimited plan which gets you 25gb. Tello also does esim without having to jump through hoops like mint if you don't have a $1500 phone.

Except that up until the above post I'd literally never even heard of an MVNO called "Tello".

Wikipedia has a list of mvno for each big provider. Last year they had a stacked deal for a few months of service for $49 and then there was a coupon that took % off and another rebate that brought it under $30 for 8gb/mo for 3mo of service. Mint back in Feb offered 1 month and 10gb for free.

The easiest way to juggle deals though is to port to Google and then it doesn't get complicated when swapping providers and dealing with number porting to each one right now though tello is the best deal for now for 5gb/$15 all in.

If you have an iPhone or Samsung though you can chase 180+ days of service through vzw T-Mobile visible US Mobile and a couple of others.

Thanks but until they can beat $7.50 per month (which last time I checked is half of $15!) for 5gb's "usable" 5G data I'm not in the market .... and when I am I'll head over to Howard Forums for advice.

Swapping to Mint from Ting was a real chore I must say lol .... it took me almost two whole minutes! (Fi was MORE of a PITA to deal with by far!)

$45 for 6 months phone service is solidly IN the budget and I see no reason to switch!

;)

It's all about timing. That deal ended in January IIRC for activating. Suppose if you buy a phone there's an added deal for service. The 5gb plan just started this month though with mint. It's easy enough to pick up sims for mint to keep the low price at renewal without biting the 12 month plan option.

When the 6 months is up I'll look into it .... I'm always shopping plans anyway and have zero "brand-loyalty".

My current unlocked s20 is still fine BTW. :)

Nextel was a bad fit for Sprint. T-Mobile and Sprint was no big deal. All that was required for both companies to start sharing at least some network capacity were PRL updates. LTE was the game changer and both companies had widely deployed it and already been sunsetting legacy CDMA and GSM networks pre merger.

mint is on 1/2 price sale at best buy almost every quarter.
10 gigs data (now 15gigs)/month for 3 months is $30 when on sale.

i cant find a $10/month 15gig plan on tello.
their lowest priced 10gig plan is $20/month.

my phone # is on google voice so i dont care about the phone # the service provider is giving me.
it's a throwaway

@JEDI

It's all about timing and Tello is consistent in pricing. Mint is the same thing with some caveats of course depending on use. If you go data only on Tello it's an all in pricing without any additional fees or taxes. Mint is a better deal when boght locally as you only pay sales tax and not the other fees they charge online / renewal.

For me hotspot data caps on mint's unlimited of 5gb is a deal killer. I'm always using hotspot for things like Google maps on the car system or doing diagnostic and tuning the require data. Tello lets me do that at full speed up to 25gb on the unlimited plan and still get slow data beyond that if needed. Mint cuts off data when you hit the limit.

Anyway, chasing the best data deals is somewhat time consuming but it's worthwhile to make sure you're paying as little as possible as they're always changing plans no matter the mvno.

ah.. we're talking apples and orages.

you're talking about the unlimited plan.
i'm talking about the 10gig/month plan. (also, all 10gigs is hotspotable)

and not time consuming. have an alert to email set for when mint's price goes to 1/2 price sale.
2min to read email and place order

Both offer 15gb plans and all can be hotspot. "Unlimited" is just marketing no matter the company selling service there's always a cap before getting throttled or cut off.

The issue of needing more data with mint is the cost is extremely high vs just selecting a new plan and activating a new billing period with Tello. If I know I'm going to be on WiFi most of the time I can shift it down to $5/mo and when I feel the need for data just do a plan change to add data. Then change it back and the remaining data rolls over for a period of time.

That only matters if you NEED "more data" lol ... my average is less than 2gb's mobile-data monthly because except when out walking/biking & streaming music, I'm on wifi.

5 GB's is more than sufficient.

Aviation is actually my go to martini gin because it's very dry and not super herbal. The husband can't stand most gins. For around $23 per 750 it's a very reasonable deal.
