The activity light on my inactive drive keeps flashing..

I just bought a WD external drive (my book 1 tb).

So far things are fine.

What worries me, is that the blue activity light flashes every 10 seconds - and a not so loud cracking noise accompanies it.

If I were to measure the time between, I'm sure it would be the same all the time.

This happens when there is absolutely no activity on the drive.

What can I do to stop it? Seems like unecessary wear and tear, and it's annoying to listen to.

Well, no visible activity. Not using any of the files on the drive (it's pure storage). Also it would be weird that the same thing would repeated at even intervals all the time.

I'm hoping it's some sort of feature that I just have to disable, and then it will stop.

Id suggest running FileMon or ProcMon from sysinternals.com and see if any IO is actually occurring....

It is most likely windows doing something, like indexing, polling, or something along those lines.

I like process explorer, it does show some disk activity actions.
