Windows sometimes drives me crazy. I am running Win8 64-bit. For years I have been ripping CDs to MP3, and now have thousands of MP3s on my drive. I have finally decided to organize them into folders as opposed to being a big mess. Moving them around is incredibly painful in Windows. For instance, I create a new folder called Tom Petty. Then I drag my Tom Petty albums into that folder. Invariably, Windows will pop up an error message stating "The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program". It usually allows me to drop 2 albums in, but leaves the third behind.
The annoying thing? It is Explorer which is preventing the move. The files are not open in any other program. The proof? I close Explorer, relaunch, go right back to the same list of MP3s, perform the same operation, and this time it succeeds.
Then of course, when I make my next folder, the same thing happens again. It always works to shut down Explorer, restart it, and do it again. I realize this is happening because Windows is trying to be helpful and recognizes the MP3s as media files, and thus wants to do something special with them. Is there any way to turn off whatever it is trying to do short of booting into Safe mode? I suspect Safe mode would work, but this is going to be a looooooong organization project given that I do a few albums at a time when I have 5 mins here and there, and I don't want to have to reboot into Safe mode just to move files around.
Thanks,
BM.
