The Abortion Issue/Smoking while pregnant.

I bring up this issue because this morning I was thinking of a Seinfeld episode. The one where Elaine gets bad at this 'psychic' who smokes even though she is pregnant. Elaine gets mad at her because she is hurting the fetus. There is also another episode where Elaine can't date a guy because he isn't pro-choice, and can't eat at a restaurant because the owner {Poppie] is pro-choice.

If she is pro-choice, why should she care if the psychic smokes or not? Maybe its the psychic, for lack of a better word, choice to smoke while she is pregnant. I mean either way you are killing a baby...so why the big fuss?
 
Maybe because she believes that the baby should either be aborted, or treated with care. Not given birth to in order to have birth defects.
 
Perhaps she believes that if you are going to give birth you should do it right, otherwise don't do it at all (abort). Which also happens to be a common saying, "if you arn't going to do it right, you might as well not do it at all".

This is off-the-wall but why isn't it the psychic's choice to have a baby with defects? I know I know, thats crazy talk but for the sake of the argument, in the end its still her choice, is it not?

Yes, it is her choice in the end, but that doesn't have to keep people from expressing their disgust in the matter.
 
A woman can smoke durring pregancy and still give birth to a perfectly healthy child. Its still really stupid considering the risks... but hey, peoples choice. You have the right to be an idiot in this country.
 
Actually it is not as bad for the baby as once thought. I?m not saying that it is a good idea, but the earlier studies were based on complication rates from the 50s and 60s. The earlier studies were not factoring out a vast array of other environmental contaminants that were the real cause for most of the instances of complications and deformity.:Q

CAN???

Actually, the vast majority of babies born to mothers who smoked during pregnancy are perfectly healthy. Smoking simply raises an already very low incidence of low birth weight.

Riiiiiight! Tell that to my wife (a smoker) who had three boys. Two of them with me, a heavy smoker.
