for my new system i was going to go with the vnf3 and A64, but with the money saved by getting the sempy i can now pick up the DFI.

I think that right now...if my CPU is any indication of things...if you're on a budget but still want something that can be pretty powerful when overclocked...a 90nm 2800+ sempy with a DFI or a 90nm 3100+ sempy and a vnf-250 or epox s754 will fit the bill at just under $200.

I'll try this SuperPi program. Never used it before. DFI board is coming in just over 12 hours 😎

41s in SuperPi on the 1M test.

any big difference between DFI and VNF3?

besides teh price? is it because DFI can ready 300+ mhz?
 
Well, around midnight now. Finally home, with a working car. Have only had a chance to POST my new Epox 8KDA3I board with 2800+ AX and Thermaltake Silent Tower (aluminum version). For starters, the silent tower is pretty damn noisy. I was gonna use a Zalman 7700AlCu, but it looked like it would block the AGP slot. Testing this setup with a 300W Heroichi power supply, GF2MX video and a stick of Kingston HyperX PC4000.

I have it POSTing reliably at 300/2700MHz with everything turned down. HT turned down to 3X, strangely at 2X didn't work too well. Probably won't mess with it anymore tonight, gotta sleep and work in the morning. Tomorrow night, will fiddle with some more settings and then hook up some drives to install Winblows for some stability testing.

Consider yourself lucky with that A64 2800+, and congrats Zap!
That's got to be one of the best 2800+ newcastle overclocks I've ever seen. Most people can't even get past 2.3 with them. How is the I version of that board handling? Voltages stable? Dead on, undervolt, overvolt? BIOS have good tweaking options? Do you have CPU multipliers?

2700mhz...mmmm.

DrMrLordX: Yes, it does appear the Epox boards can do 300HTT...barely. Mine is only prime stable at 295, but it does manage nicely. My vcore fluctuates pretty wildly though. It's a good thing my CPU seems to have a lot more room at stock voltage, or I'd be getting some heavy instability right about now. It also seems to be a bit quirky with memory. The manual says it can't run two DIMMs of dual sided memory, which I am doing. It seems to like a TRAS of 8 best. Gives the most compatibility.

Mustang: Big difference between the DFI and the VNF250/8KDA3j.
Enormous overclocking options, better stability at higher overclocks. The DFI is supposed to handle 325HTT pretty easily, although it's chipset cooler gets very warm. I'm surprised DFI has a passive aluminum one on it. Epox offered a small copper one with a fan. Upgrading to an active cooling solution would probably yield in a higher HTT on the DFI, maybe past 350.

I might get myself a DFI & 2800+ or DFI & 3100+(90nm).

I have pc 2700 and 3200 memory , AGP 6800, Antec PSU.... hopefully I dont have to upgrade anything else besides mobo and cpu.
 
Havent seen this posted yet. Does your 90nm Semp detect as Palermo or Winchester (with 256kb disabled). Ive heard reports from my friends at ocforums that Oakville (mobile winchester) has begun to appear in the UK, which should give us an indication of the arrival of the E0s

 
It actually detects as Paris, but I think that's because CPU-Z needs an update to properly identify these chips. Anywho...

The DFI board.
Well, the DFI is fantastic. It's so fantastic, in fact, that its backplate is incompatible with my Zalman, so I could not perform the install. Who'd have thought? An overclocker's dream board is incompatible with one of the best overclocking HSFs available? Go figure. Now I guess I need to find a new backplate. The screw risers in the DFI sit so low that my standoffs for my Zalman can't screw in. They just sit limply in the risers. I thought about modding the backplate, but that would just make the risers sit even lower into the board, and my Zalman would never be able to reach the standoffs.
 
The only thing it says under stepping is "0", so I'm guessing it's reading wrong.
Does anyone know where I can find a DFI and Zalman compatible backplate?
 
I mean, a backplate came with your Zalman, peel the one off the DFI and used that. That is what I did, and it is working great now 🙂
 
Hmm... well, I am sure that somebody that used one with a p4 has to have one laying around, I used 2 zalman coolers - and used both on A64's, or I would just send you it to you until you could find a new one. On second thought, email zalman support. When I was dumb enough to break a fan blade, they sent me free replacement fan, no questions asked. Pretty quick too, it arrived about 4 days after I emailed them.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to email Zalman and DFI, and see if one of them will come to my rescue. In the meantime, I'm going to search online and see if I can't purchase one.

Odd, my CNPS 7000-Cu came with a backplate ... that cooler won't fit on most boards without its proper backplate. Zalman must have screwed up - check with them first, they should send you a replacement for the missing part.

Did you have an A or B series?
I was looking around online and it seems as if the initial plain jane 7000 series did not come with a backplate, which was rectified in the A series that included one, and continued into the B series and 7700 series. I emailed Zalman, Newegg (got the DFI from them) and ZZF (got the Zalman from them) about the need for a compatible backplate. One of them should come to my aid soon.

Haven't looked too much into voltages other than to see that default feeds the CPU 1.6+ volts. I thought my CPU was supposed to be 1.5v? Anyways, 300/2700 was not stable. Would get locks on POST or in BIOS, but what a pretty number. 😉 Don't have patience right now to find the maximum, so I'm running it at around 2500MHz. Was almost getting around to installing Windows last night, but got busy with other stuff. The "I" board does have multipliers. It has a large passive heatsink on chipset, which does not get too hot. BIOS tweaking options seem fairly complete to my eyes. Vmem max is 2.8v, bit low.

I think maybe my high overclock is from the "AX" stepping. A few people recommended getting that one.

If everything continues this well, worth the money (under $200 after tax and shipping for CPU/mobo).

Strange that they would sell it without a backplate at first (I have the B revision). The backplates that came with my Asus K8N and retail 2800+ Newcastle chip certainly wouldn't do the job. Hope you get a response soon!
 
Welp, ZZF replied back to me and said they don't have any backplates, so they can't help me. I finally got DFI's site working, so I fired them an email as well. My biggest hope is on Zalman, since they manufacture the heatsink...
