XbitLabs 6800GS article

"The GeForce 6800 GT could serve that purpose, but NV40 and NV45 chips are being manufactured at IBM facilities and have a high cost, so NVIDIA doesn?t have much room for price adjustment with them."

This could be the reason the 6800GT has been killed.

Too bad the GS is on borrowed time itself. I have seen estimates of it being phased out by Q1 2006.

Yeah, makes most sense.
Why keep going with 3+ product lines (Ultra, GT, NU and XT?) when you can reorganise and just make a single, cheaper chip and sell it at just under the price of your mid range (GT) chip for that price bracket, lessen the competition on your own mid range (6800NU vs 6600GT) and basically reduce a lot of confusion, while putting out a more competetive product at a lower price point, thus making more money.
