@#$%!!!!
I am one sad Rollo this evening. After spending ~ 5 hours of my night working on it, I've thrown in the towel and will hopefully be able to get my money back on the Abit 5800. :(

My experiences with it were mainly inability to get to Windows even, although it did a couple times with so much distortion it was unusable. :(

This truly saddens me. This card is built like a brick shithouse, I had high hopes for using it. :(

Ouch, that sucks. Good luck getting this straightened out. Going to look for another 5800?

I wouldn't be against the idea. ;)

Especially if it was one of the Abit OTES or Leadtek Ultras.

Rollo, given the insane numbers being tossed around at B3D, I'd just hold out for the NV40 or R420 at this point, one of which may even be available in April.

Thanks Shady, but I've already owned a MSI 5800. It was a nice enough card, but I wanted the Ultra or OTES for the huge fan setup. The Leadtek I'd settle for due to it has a pretty cool system as well.

I'm working with the seller to RMA the one I bought, hopefully that will work out.

I'll be getting a nV40 or R420 either way Pete. I just want the 5800 to play with as a collectable.

who wouldn't? if there was a cheap enough one around i'd grab one and keep it as a collectable. definatly go with the Ultra variant as a collectable! that's the bigger leaf blower!

I was willing to do the Abit one because they built it with 2ns 1GHz RAM, all copper heatsinks, dual heatpipes, and the outside exhaust, but quiet.

I figured I'd have everything that was cool about the Ultra minus the noise, as all 5800NUs I've seen reference to/owned OCd to Ultra speed. I figured this one would be a lock, especially the RAM.

:(

Can't believe you went to ebay.

Just buy yourself a 5900 for now if you want. But next gen cards look insane.

Buying nVidia wasn't the point, buying a rare, interesting card was.
I never said the point was to buy Nvidia. In case of rarity, Ebay was a good choice.

You should have gotten the 5800 Ultra. Forget the 5800.

Thanks for the advice. Next time I'll get the 5900 like you recommend in your first post, or the 5800 Ultra you recommend in your second.

Errr.....yeah.

OK. I recommended the 5900 because it gives similar performance compared to the 5800 that you just lost. Then I said you should have gotten the 5800 Ultra because it is more rare than the 5800. The 5800 Ultra also woops the 5900's ass.

OK. Do you fail to notice that the 5800 and the 5800 Ultra are two different cards.

LOL by "generic" I meant the 9800Pro has almost become synonymous with "video card" lately. Is there anyone that doesn't have one? (e.g. even Ben Skywalker, nVidia devotee' of old, has a 9800 Pro these days)

Well I went and bought an Antec 350 watt power supply at Best Buy today to try and get the 5800 going in my son's box as he has a nVidia motherboard, but a generic 300watt psu that couldn't even get it to post. Who knows, maybe the issue is with the MSI K8T Neo and the 5800. It's worth a try anyway.

Apparently it wasn't worth a try- I got a post screen with smile faces and text all over, nothing more. No beeps, no Windows, nothing.

Well hopefully the guy I bought it from is good to his word that he'll try to rma it for me on his return from spring break. :(

If not, I have the $200 paper weight.
